anklosaur : As Sam Cyrus pointed out, at least with a normal land line (POTS) you can pickup a cheap phone that is powered by the phone line and always have service, even during power outages, unless you've been hit by a major catastrophe that wiped out the phone lines as well as the power. That kind of peace of mind just cannot be had with VOIP or other cable/internet based phone services no matter how nice they are when they're on.

anon : We decided to bundle our services with Suddenlink including phone services. In 3 months we were without phone service 3 times, twice because of weather, once no apparent reason. When we were switching to Suddenlink the customer service was excellent. When we decided to cancel and go back to our provider of 39 years, the customer service was maddening to say the least. Three weeks into the cancellation process, Suddenlink is refusing to release our phone number, which we have had for 39 years, to our previous provider. We will now be required to set up a new phone number with our previous provider just to be able to get our land line back.

I plan to tell anyone I know to run from Suddenlink's phone service.

anon : Another option is to use Skype. I had it on my computer and used it there. I decided to purchase a Linksys CIT400 Skype phone from Amazon ($90.00) and subscribed to Skypeout ($22.00 a year) with a Skypein number ($20.00 a year). I have all the bells and whistles (caller id, call waiting, voice mail, conference call, unlimited long distance in the states, and others I haven't even used).Calls are clear on both ends. I have used it since May and love it (no problems at all). In case of an outage, I have a cell Virginmobileusa ($15 every 3 months). I save over $500.00 a year and I haven't seen one iota of difference in service.

SCuervo : Every time the power goes out here (frequently) I see SL roll two trucks to this street. It happened again yesterday because of a little rain. The electricity shouldn't be going out (underground / street wiring) but SL also shouldn't need to be sending trucks constantly either. I can only guess its phone related otherwise I doubt they'd be responding so hastily. I think trying to save a few bucks going that route would be tenuous at best.

DJBuzz24 : I'll second that and add that giving your money to SuddenLink in general is a bad idea. Make sure you read their User Agreements and Terms of Service before you do ANYTHING.

I'll also add, if it sounds too good to be true, it most certainly is. SuddenLink's ads, flyers, and constantly rolling work trucks are what switched me over. The price was right, and I knew there were always techs in the area if I had issues (and trust me, I have).

It was *all* too good to be true. In my experience, the installers are installing cable modems, yet neither of my local installers even owned a computer until this year. None of them know even the basics of IP networking, and instead are actual *cable* techs. Anything outside of signal and noise ratios are out of their realm.

If you want phone or network service, go with a phone company. If you want constant problems with a top notch, misinformed/uninformed staff behind you, go with SuddenLink. I can't say enough about the quality of personalities I've dealt with, I just wish they knew more about what they were doing.

Again, purge your home of all things SuddenLink before it's too late!

anon : Verizon has raised their rates again on my Freedom Essentials plan and I am considering Suddenlink telephone service. I received a brochure in the mail today offering phone for an additional $30 per month. I live in St. Albans, WV and am wondering if users of the phone service are satisfied. The rate seems too good to be true. I currently have internet and digital tv service from Suddenlink and am pleased with the value received for my money. Any information you could provide would be appreciated. Thanks!
