[Rant] Doesn't that stink!

City of phoenix to add a dollar[or more] to water bills to pay for increased costs of jailing those caught extreme DUI.
HELLO!!!! Why should law abiding citizens foot the bill for these asshats that want to drink and drive. Grrrrrrrr!

No matter how they collect it, they're still going to collect from the "law abiding" sector to cover increased costs. Who do you think pays for increased law enforcement costs?

Would you rather save a buck now and pay thousands for funeral arrangements, medical costs, insurance rates because they leave them on the street? Look at the big picture. For twelve dollars a year, you are keeping unsafe people off the street. I only wish more places would do this, then perhaps criminals would actually be afraid of the consequences.

Well they need to get that $12 from the OFFENDER in the form of an increased surcharge. THEY do the crime, THEY should do the time and PAY for being JAILED.
the general public already pays for police and jails via taxes.
if you make the crime prohibitively expensive and charge them the fees, maybe they'll think twice before getting behind the wheel.

Or they should seize the vehicles and auction it off to recoup the expenses.

There you go!
Exactly what should happen!

I am also NOT averse to using prison labor to help repay the costs to "house" them!

Chain Gangs anyone!?!?!

They'd need to get a lot more than $12 from the offender. Since they are collecting from all paying water customers. Unless we are to assume that all paying water customers are also arrested drunk drivers and it will all be paid for by the offenders.

They can fine the offenders more than $12, but there is no guarantee that they'll pay or be able to afford to pay. And there is a guarantee that water customers will pay, unless they no longer want water.

Unfortunately they can only bill criminals with fines when they get caught breaking the law. They can bill you monthly!

I never heard of a vehicle being seized for a DUI. The vehicle is towed to a impound lot. I know that they have seized vehicles if drugs were found in them. But regarding DUI, I'm going to ask couple of Police Officers that I work with.

Hard to seize a vehicle, if it's a lease vehicle.

I know here, if there is no one available to drive it, then it's towed to the impound lot.
I know of vehicles that were seized as drugs were found in them. I was informed my people in the know, it doesn't matter if you own the vehicle, borrowed it or leased it. If drugs are found it the vehicle, it will be seized.
