I did try to port my Vonage number away a few months ago. I've been a customer for 5 years or so. They lied and said I was under contract and therefore not eligible for a port.
Vonage works great and for 5 years I was a happy camper but trying to leave them is like breaking up with a bi-polar wife (no offense ladies, I know many men aren't any better). |

The FCC guidelines were written to allow people to port who are unhappy with their current service, just want to change, etc. ( »The FCC has expanded LNP to VOIP ) I don't think they can refuse a port because they say "you're under contract." Cellphone companies can't refuse a port for that, although they probably will try to bill an early termination fee once you ported out. Even if you're cancelling Vonage early, it's a $39.95 penalty. Worth paying if you want to move your number. |

If your account has been active with Vonage for 5 years, you are in no way in contract with them. The contract I know of is for only two years (accounts opened on or after January 2007). You can port your number away from Vonage. Initiate a number transfer with another company of your choice. if you are told by any Vonage rep that it is possible, he/she is either lying or doesnt know anything about it. Ask for a supervisor or someone who is knows better. Best of luck, sir. |

Porting out your number will not cancel your Vonage account. Doesn't work like a telco. |

While consumers who wish to switch carriers may request service from and port numbers to a new carrier at any time, they are still obligated to pay any early termination fees they may have under an existing contract, and they are obligated to pay any outstanding balance owed to the old carrier.
2) Consumers interested in switching providers should review their existing contract to determine what fees or charges would apply.
3) However, once a consumer has requested service from a new carrier, the old carrier may not delay or refuse to port a number even if that individual owes money for an outstanding balance or termination fee.
This is for wireless, but I can't see the FCC giving VOIP carriers extra privileges to refuse ports because they're under contract. |

Just call them and keep repeating "Cancel the Service". Make it annoying. Ask for a supervisor then punctuate it with "Cancel the Service".
BTW, why are you not just going mobile? I have, and I am very happy not to have phone bills. |

Not true. It works that way for cell phones but not for VoIP. You specifically have to call back to the provider and cancel the account.
