Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release to Automatic Updates

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release to Automatic Updates
quote:
Hi All,

Microsoft is committed to providing quality products to customers. As part of this commitment, we would like to remind you that Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) will be released to Automatic Updates shortly. The third service pack to Windows XP includes the previously released updates and hotfixes to Windows XP, creating a new baseline for servicing.

Optional Actions

If you wish to prevent users from installing Windows XP SP3 through Automatic Updates, Microsoft recommends you take one or more of the following steps:

1. Download and deploy the Windows Service Pack Blocker Kit. The Blocker Toolkit is available in the Microsoft Download Center.

2. Deploy an update management solution that provides full control over the updates you deploy to computers in your network (Compare Update Management Solutions). IT Administrators using an update management solution should use their product’s standard features, rather than the Blocker Toolkit, to control SP1 distribution.

Thanks Nick!

Just added SP 3 to my laptop (AMD Turion) last night after taking a deep breath, lol....all is well.

Working up the nerve to add it to my main PC (also AMD).

I keep auto updates turned off, but I saw it being offered with manual updates.

Deployed to several desktops and a laptop so far, no problems.

One of my computers crashed halfway through the SP3 install. The crash was caused by a hardware problem, nothing to do with Windows. But, being halfway through a service pack install, I figured the machine was hosed.

It wasn't. Upon rebooting, the SP3 installer came up and automatically went into rollback mode. As I watched, it uninstalled all the parts of SP3 it had installed so far, then it reinstalled all the parts of SP2 it had previously removed, restoring my system right back to its initial condition. I was impressed as hell.

Second attempt to install SP3 completed with no problems.

Funny that they did not mention the other alternative: disable automatic updating.

If you've got 30 or 40 PCs to administer, it's too low a number to use WSUS, but still a time consuming project to roll out individually...

I read on one of the overviews of SP 3 that if the install gets interrupted it will resume. I guess your issue fell into that category, which was good!

Hi everyone
AS some of you may be aware in that Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release to Automatic Updates is imminent. Now should you find that this update is not to your liking or you should find any fault with this update you can always uninstall it and ask here on how to proceed

Please note in that My personal experience with this update is that you may find some software will no longer work. Also please note that My own personal findings are that this is most unlikely for the vast amount of users but there will be some notably those of you who use certain Themes, Visual Styles, Skins, Wallpapers, Backgrounds, Icons, Cursors, Logons, Boot Screen types of software

So far, out of roughly 40 SP3 installs with IE7 and office updates, I've had issues with one IE7 and four SP3 installs. the IE7 issue was with a Spybot S&D BHO that caused cpu thrashing, and three SP3 installs removed database links in a vendor application. (if your IE7 freezes up the system, start IE without add-ons, disable all then enable until you find the culprit.

One machine is still at SP2 until I resolve the "catalog failed to load" issue. I have some things from MSKB 950717, 925877 and 822795 to review and try. This PC has a MICR/check scanning and imaging device with a less-than stable driver and a somewhat feckless vendor rep, so I must proceed with additional care.

I have another thirty to forty systems to go pending software vendor confirmation of SP3 support, then will be done for awhile.

after installing win xpsp3, i noticed that i no longer had the option for installing "NETFramework 3", the update for "ms vitual machine", or "win media player 10", through "windows updates", so i think that there are some bugs with MS's implementation of win xpsp3..

I have WSUS on my 20 PC LAN. Not sure why you'd say it's too low a number.

I mean, I already have the server, WSUS is free and easy to use, why wouldn't you?

Maybe I misunderstood what you meant.

Your not by yourself on the option for installing NetFramework 3 through windows updates. The option was offered before installing SP3 and now it isn't there anymore.

That's because NETFramework 3.5 replaced 3.0. Go here »netfx3.com/ to get it. Click on the download button at the top of the page. That takes you to the download page. Note that there is a small version that is really a downloader to fetch what's needed.

If you prefer to download the entire package for later installation or to install on several PCs, scroll down to "Full Redistributable Package" near the bottom of the page.

Has SP3 been released to Automatic updates yet ?

I've not seen any sign of it on the 3 PCs I checked

I am hesitant to install it, running a Compaq with an AMD processor, and all the problems that have been associated with HP/Compaq w/AMD's and XPsp3....sigh....watch the forums be flooded over the next few days with similar users such as I, saying their machine is hosed

I am awaiting your response when you add it to your main PC. Mine is also an AMD so I've just let it be and not updated. Let us all know if it works on your main system, please.

After a full backup and lots of worry, I installed SP3 on my Thinkpad R51 without any problems I can find. I did turn off anti-virus and anti-spyware/trojan softwares first.

I also installed IE7 later. So now, this laptop should be all current.

Has it actually been resolved that there are updates within this service pack that are really necessary (that aren't available separately?) Last I'd read, there really wasn't anything here to balance the usual "oh-oh, a servicepack" risks . And for friends who are running older Norton AVs, were those issues resolved?

And last, if installed, is it better to update to IE7 from 6 AFTER the sp install to avoid the "can't uninstall IE7" issue reported earlier?

As I understand it, if XP is fully patched there is no advantage to installing SP3. In addition, my box is a Compaq with AMD processor.

Thus SP3 will not be installed here.

1. About AMD Concerns with XP SP3

If you have a conflicting installation of the intelppm driver on an AMD system, you will not receive XP SP3 through Windows Update. This condition is automatically filtered and automatically blocked for you, and has been for several weeks even prior to making XP SP3 generally available.

To receive XP SP3 through Windows Update, you need to correct the issue:

You can either disable the Service entry:
(Start, Run, sc config intelppm Start= disabled

Or, MS-MVP Jesper Johannson has a little free utility to do this for you: »https://msinfluentials.com/blogs/jesper/···sp3.aspx

2. About Concerns with Antivirus Programs

You should disable your Antivirus software prior to installing XP SP3 -- whether received through Automatic Updates or doing it with a dowloaded image. The people who got into difficulties did not do this.

Even then, both Microsoft and Symantec offer an easy repair utility to undo the matter:
Symantec/Norton article: »aumha.net/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=3···k=t&sd=a

Microsoft Repair Utility: »www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta···ylang=en
