Most antennas built in the glass need a source of power and typically this power is sent from the radio....
Are you sure about that? I've seen a very few aftermarket rod antenns with a built in pre-amp that required power. But I've never never heard of a factory antenna built into the window glass that required power...

Yes I'm sure.

Heres the wiring on an 08 Camry as an example:

Unless I'm missing something, the references to "Power Antenna" in those descriptions is refering to a powered telescoping antenna mast. A motorized antenna mast that raises and lowers itself when the radio is powered on/off?

You'd be crazy to think a 2008 Camry has a power telescoping antenna.

Dr. Olds it sounds like you knows what your talking about, but from experience I can say I have put a radio in without supplying power to the power antenna wire (the solid blue wire for the aftermarket wiring harness but almost never that color on the vehicle side) and the reception suffered, afterwards supplying power to the appropriate wire cleared it up.

Also how can you explain the power antenna wire located behind the radio of cars that have a glass mount antenna?

I've seen it and experienced it in plenty of cars other than newer Camry's...

It supplies the power the antenna amplifier needs to operate?

(I haven't confirmed this via a wiring diagram)

"Most antennas" built into the glass do not need a source of power. They would only require power if they are equipped with an antenna amplifier, which MOST aren't.

Just like I'd explain removeable dash plates and wire connectors included from the factory in a brand new stripped down car without a clock or A/C or in-dash radio... dealer installed options!

If the car has a "Power Antenna" the wire is for activating the relay that raises and lowers the antenna when the radio is powered on/off. If the vehicle doesn't have a "Power Antenna" the wire would not be used.

You seem to be mixing the terminology together at times. The manufacturer can choose what they want, but we can't.

• Power Antenna

• Antenna Amplifier (powered)

1) Rear window antenna W/o diversity

Earlier Camry had the old style power mast antennas, while later Camry are in the glass with a Power Amplifier for the embedded in-glass antenna.

The confusion I had was that most glass mounted antennas are amplified, not that an antenna built into the glass needed power supplied to it.

Thank you all for the clarification, I guess the incidents I had where supplying power to the antenna wire and noticing better recpetion was either a placebo effect or happened to be in one of those few cars with an amplified antenna (Toyota Camry).

Actually, I think the use of pre-amps and the like is gaining in popularity. With all the electronics on-board these days they need all the help they can get. And, there is still a rather large base that still likes to listen to AM!
