Every so often I go looking for image management/viewing software.
Basically, I'm looking for something that uses tag based organization, allows for easy EXIF/tag editing and can handle 30,000+ images with good performance. Picasa and the Vista Photo Gallery fall short of what I'm looking for. Does anyone have any recommendations?
The two main apps I use now are FastStone and Cam2PC. I've never found a faster or easier full screen viewer than cam2pc. |

I'm evaluating ACDSee Pro 2 now. So far the speed is quite impressive for both full screen rendering and searching/thumbnail browsing. It seems to have a few quirks though but the responsiveness might make them tollerable.
Now if someone could only make an app with this performance and date categorization and a 3D user interface like PicLens. |

| reply to normat I'm currently managing 100,000+ images with Microsoft Expression Media. It works fine for my needs...but I probably wouldn't have purchased it without the hefty academic discount. -- Judd Patterson Photography |

| Last time I looked at lightroom I remember it didn't work exactly like I wanted.
I just tried to look at Expression. I have an MSDN subscription and I used to be able to download the Expression products. I tried out some WPF and silverlight development stuff a while back. For some reason the downloads are disabled on my account now.
So far the performance and rendering of ACDSee has been outstanding. It doesn't seem to slow down if you make a selection of thousands of images. Given that I could probably put up with some of the quirks. |

| I do like ACDSee. Some things about it just feel a little awkward. Especially when in the full screen viewer. That could just be because I'm new at it. It's rendering speed for both thumbnails, searching and full screen viewing are excellent. I don't think anything else is as fast.
I'd actually be happy with Windows Photo Gallery if they allowed it to be a bit more customizable. The thumbnail manager on that is exactly what I'm looking for as far as navigation. However, it falls short on on other areas. The Preview mode on Windows Photo Gallery is absolutely horrible and disgusting. Well, perhaps not disgusting but I really hate it. It ruins what would otherwise be a good app. If they just allowed you to specify a custom viewer to launch instead all would be perfect. |
