jonnyz : My experience with the modular 4.6 has been a good one. My 97 F-150 has the 4.6 SOHC and still runs great. Even with only 210 HP / 290 lb/ft, it runs similar 1/4 miles to a 5.7 hemi. The engines can take a beating, so that shouldn't be an issue.

There's a lot of good stuff here:

As for making it DOHC, I'm not even sure it's possible. If it is, it's way more trouble then it's worth.

Modifications for the 4.6s are plentiful, but like the article says, there are lots of different parts in these "modular" 4.6s so make sure any aftermarket stuff is for the exact engine you have. The best performance gains can be had with the exhaust system IMO.

--
Join the RC5 team.

GunnarDanne : I have a Crown Vic that has some sentimental value but it's not drive-able right now. It doesn't pass inspection. It wouldn't take much to make it pass. But the chassis is pretty rusted and one of the stabilizer links actually came off. I thought about pulling the engine and putting it in another car (Mustang). Since its one of the earlier 4.6's (1992), would the block take most add-ons? If it does, I wouldn't feel so bad about getting rid of the car since the heart of it is still being used.

*Specifically I'm leaning towards making it DOHC
