said by Maccawolf :(probably just have to leave the key there.) If you loose the only key unless there is a mobile locksmith in your area with the right equipment then you will be towing the car to the dealer.
This has been something that I have been going back and forth about for several months for because I just have a REALLY hard time paying that kind of money for a KEY..... Get a used remote on ebay for $20, get a key blank from americanautolock.com and the dealer should be able to cut it and then just pay the $90 to program it.
BTW lotusracer , the problem with taking it to ANY keymaker is that it's not an outside cut like they used to be, it's an inside cut, and the places I've seen around here don't even have the equipment to do inside cuts, There are plenty of aftermarket systems that can cut these keys (including the ability to originate keys without a master to copy from) and obtain the immobilizer PIN that is required to program the car to allow the key to start it. The problem is they are hard to find. I drive an old BMW and when I bought it I was given an "Ilco" key which obviously was copied by a non-dealer locksmith... but even if I supplied the key blanks I could not find any place with the equipment to duplicate the keys... they are basically the same as the VW keys you have but are inverted.. the edges are on the outside, not the inside.
I have been able to get Tom Bush VW in Jacksonville, FL to copy blanks I supplied at no charge. I think I might some remotes that will work for a 2001 VW let me check and if you are interested pay for shipping and its yours. -- 09:F9:11:02:9D:74:E3:5B:D8:41:56:C5:63:56:88:C0 |
