Something to check is the grounding from your Network Interface Box to the ground. Make sure the connection is good.

While things can get zapped because of lightning, it really shouldn't happen. I've had three DSL modems at my office for several years with no issues...I've had DSL at home for a few years and have never had lightning issues here either.

While I have replaced my share of blown modems, I have to say that they seem to do pretty well. I use a 327, and don't usually unplug it during storms, and haven't had any hiccups yet. Obviously ymmv, but if you can pick one up cheap, then it would be worth your money.
