| next best alternative in Manhattan?
Hello,
I am moving to Manhattan (2nd ave and 45th street) and I unfortunately FIOS is not an option for the moment.
I don't know any of the US cable / dsl companies and was wondering what is the next best alternative to FIOS in Manhattan?
I know cable in Canada is the fastest / most reliable, but dunno if RCN/Comcast/RoadRunner/etc. are any good.
Sorry if this isn't the best forum to post to (what would it be?) |

@verizon.net | I live in NJ, before switching to Fios I had comcast. I actually didn't have any BT throttling like most people but the upload speed or lack thereof was annoying to me. I would recommend either comcast or RR (I've heard it's good) |

| reply to edz I have an apartment in Manhattan and also have no FiOS. Used to have Time Warner for Internet (still do for TV) but for Internet - DSL works just fine at 3 X 768.
Most buildings in Manhattan are very close to the central office and therefore get a really good transmit and receive rate. I definitely feel my DSL is far better than my TWC connection was, and it never goes down.
At 45th street and second avenue, you are 5 blocks from the central office at 1095 6th avenue and about 10 blocks from the 36th street office on the east side. You will get the max DSL speed at your apartmnt with no problems.
IMHO, I like to split the carriers because when my Time Warner Cable would go out, I would lose everything. Now I have diversity. |

I'm leaning towards RR + Time Warner's DTValue package, a bit expensive ($100), but 10mbps and decent cable package.
Only dissapointed you need to rent the set-top boxes (need 2) and the upload is less than 1mbps. |

| reply to edz Far as I know, Time Warner is the only cable company widely available in Manhattan. RCN is only available in a limited number of buildings. According to the Cablevision website, Cablevision isn't available in 10009. (Stuytown) Actually, I don't think Cablevision/Optimum is available in Manhattan at all. |

Not yet... rumors are flying that TWC will impost caps in certain markets. Probably not NYC due to competition but well see... |
