| Loss of internet connection during wireless download
BACKGROUND: Hello. I am currently connected to Cable internet using Charter Communications. I'm using a Netgear Router that we recently purchased from Fry's, and am currently running Windows Vista on an HP laptop. My fiance, who also experiences the same problem, is using Vista on a Toshiba laptop. (Sorry for not being descriptive, I am new and unaware of all relevant information). We are subscribed for 10MB download speed, and when my laptop is connected to the Netgear Router using an ethernet cable, I am able to download large files such as "World of Warcraft" with ease.
PROBLEM: However, whenever my fiance or I try to even watch a video on Youtube WIRELESSLY, our router loses connection to the internet, gives us 1-2 flashing lights and must be unplugged to restart our connection.
I also have a PlayStation 3, and while I am able to download demos and videos, the download speed is PAINFULLY slow. Even small files take long periods of time, unreasonably so for a 10MB download speed.
We contacted Charter and they sent a technician down to our house. The tech checked their box and said there were no problems on their end, and that we should return our seemingly "faulty" router. We did so, exchanging it for another Netgear, and the problem remains.
We are able to wirelessly connect to the internet and check email, and even play World of Warcraft! However, almost any download of any kind will cause our router to lose connection to the internet, with the 1 or 2 blinking lights (instead of 3 solid) until it is unplugged.
Thanks to anyone who can attempt to solve my problem. I have been searching for a solution for a long period of time, and am unable to find one. The closest I have gotten to self-helping the situation is that I have discovered that a "QoS Packet Scheduler" is enabled under wirless connection properties. |

@charter.com | Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Today when buying songs from Itunes wirelessly the router lost connection and had to be unplugged and plugged back in. Thanks in advance to anybody who can shed some light on the situation. |

| Still sounds like a bad router. Is the replacement the same make/model as the first one? Is there newer firmware available from Netgear? If you connect one of the laptops via Ethernet for testing, do the problems remain? Have you tried changing channels on the router to see if you can avoid any interference from nearby networks? |

| Thanks for the response. Yes, the replacement is the same make/model as the first. When connecting one of the laptops via Ethernet, the problems no longer exist. I am able to freely download via Ethernet with no interruptions. I have not tried changing channels, due to the fact that I am able to consistently play World of Warcraft (a constant connection) with no problems. The problem is only when downloading files, then the router loses connection to the internet. UPDATE: My fiance and I have discovered that it is not only a "Linksys" router (not Netgear), but it does not express compatibility with Vista! We are going to replace the router as soon as possible and see what possible solutions remain. Thank you very much and I will update this with current status as soon as we can. Thank you. |

| I have an identical problem. Direct ethernet connection has no problems with downloads but I get kicked off the connection whenever I use my wireless connection to the same router for streaming videos or downloads (As do my roommates with their wireless connections). I too have no problems with email, internet or online games. |

| Well, we returned our old router and got a new Zoom cable modem. We bought a separate Linksys wireless router (stating that it is compatible with Vista on the box) to plug into the Zoom modem, and while the internet download speed keeps going from 86 minutes remaining to 36 hours remaining (downloading a 3.5GB file), our internet connection has not disconnected us yet. We will have to see how playing World of Warcraft is affected, but it looks like our problem has been solved. Meddy, are you and your roommates using Vista? Maybe the router is incompatible with your systems. Hope this helps, and hopefully this problem is solved. |

@charter.com | Update: Problem is solved! We have never once been disconnected from the internet, so it appears swapping our router for a Vista-compatible model fixed the problem. |
