ctpie : i appreciate the time you guys put in. the main things that should be considered are 1. are the loosing sync? or are they disconnecting from internet? if they are loosing sync plug directly into nid. if still nothing call phone company and tell them to fix it as many times as they have to. one thing to keep in mind is that if look at your modem set up page (192.168.1.1) your dsl sync rate can tell you alot. if you have 1.5meg typically it will sync at 1.795 to insure you get the spead you are paying for, but in some instances distance from the dslam and cable will dramatically effect the speed...bridge tap is also a big one that is where cable count goes in more than one direction...i can go on and on..dsl is a new critter and can be very tempermental i'll do my best to help...

thanks again

While power influence can play a factor in the degradation of the noise margins, it isn't the "typical" factor in why the modem loses sync. And you don't get power influence from lightning storms. The AC inductance bleeds over onto the copper cable, and in most cases will give you a nasty hum if it's high enough.

And are you saying that when the modem loses sync, it's a fault somewhere in the ATM network?
DracoFelis : Add me to the list of CenturyTel users who have been experiencing disconnects during lightning storms. And at the same time I could often hear popping noises on the phone line during those same storms.

So I began to suspect that the two were related, and that it was the noise on the line that was causing the modem to disconnect. Which got me to thinking, that perhaps it was time to get a quality phone line splitter/filter. Which is why I recently spent $40 for this whole house DSL splitter/filter (which I installed in the basement, directly off the phone line as it came into the house): »www.wilcominc.com/Item.cfm?ProdID=100

And while I haven't had the thing long enough to know if it will solve all of my lightning disconnect problems (as I've only been through one lightning storm since installing it), I noticed the improvement almost immediately. After installing that device (to replace the cheap filters that originally came with my DSL modem), I noticed that static/popping on the phone line was greatly reduced AND the DSL modem was connecting to CenturyTel much quicker than before (and seemed to keep its connection longer). So clearly the device was working as advertised, to better "filter" for the needs of the phone lines and the DSL modem (then the cheap filters I had been using were).

So I guess the bottom line is that noise on the line can do nasty things to DSL connections, and lightning is just one of the things that can add noise to phone lines. While we might never be able to get rid of that noise (we don't control the weather, for example), we at least have the option to use quality phone line filters to minimize the impact on our phones and DSL lines. And just because you normally get decent speeds when you do connect (like I did, before upgrading my DSL filters), doesn't mean you don't "need" better DSL filtration (as my experience shows that quality filters can sometimes help you maintain the connection when noise would otherwise disconnect you).
