[Rant] Canon MP530 All In One...

Printer/scanner/copier/fax comes with "Enable Status Monitor" checked by default which monitors ink levels in the 5 tanks. It mentions in the paperwork, NOT TO PRINT when one or more ink tanks are empty because it will damage the inkjets and void the warranty!

What they fail to mention is ALL FUNCTIONS STOP WORKING when an ink cartridge error occurs. I visually inspected the tanks and they still have ink left even though the software says it's empty.

So I uncheck the "Enable Status Monitor" and press reset... nothing happens. I unplug the power cord for a few and plug back in... still the ink error shows in the console window and all functions are disabled.

A find a work around on a web forum:

quote:
Start
Settings
Printers and Faxes
right click on your printer icon
click on "Printing Preferences"
in the dialog box, click on "Maintenance"
click on "View Printer Status"
in the dialog box, click on "Options"
then deselect the "Enable Status Monitor" option
At this point the error still exists, then:

quote:
When the alarm light blinks and the printer won't do anything not even scan, you can press the reset button (on the printer) for 10 seconds and then, while holding the reset button down, you simultaneously press the OK button (on the printer) for a few more seconds. For some reason, I sometimes need to do it several times before the alarm light goes off but so far, it always unblocked the printer in the end.
At that point, do the "Enable Status Monitor"
This enabled all the functions but the ink level still reads low.

Up to this point, well over a year now I have always replaced the ink cartridges when the software told me it was empty even though they looked half full to me. Now I realize I have been sending half full cartridges through the mail to be recycled! I would upload digital pictures of the said cartridges but the batteries just died on my Canon PowerShot S2-IS.

I figure they owe me 2 yrs worth of ink!

I had an Epson printer that did the same thing. It drove me nuts. They've lost a costumer for life with that stunt.

Same thing here with HP. After i cleared the alarm, I think i got another 4 months of printing with that "low ink" cart!
I don't replace when their "we need more money" software tells me to.

Congratulations!

It has been known and commented on for a long time that printer manufacturers, HP in particular, have their machines "lie" to you. I hope you have learned a very valuable lesson and in the future perhaps you will question something that is so easy to corroborate. It's quite simple. Print untill it looks crappy. Another tip is if you're printing in B/W, make sure the printer is NOT set for color. Those clever manufacturers will use the more expensive color cartridge to make black.
