Didn't know cable boxes worked like this!

So I had a friend who moved from New Balitmore, MI to Clinton Township, MI. Two different Comcast systems. They had a Moto DVR (one of the newer ones... DCH?) with their old Comcast system and took it with them, since their service wasn't terminated at their old address yet. Their new address also had Comcast service that wasn't terminated yet. Upon hooking the box up, it actually worked! And to my surprise (I wasn't there when they hooked it up) it actually kept the old channel mappings, even though the new system had different mappings! The only caveats were the Weather Channel not displaying, and a channel called Global we have in New Baltimore that was mapped as an educational channel.

Still, pretty trippy nonetheless! Everything worked--guide data, DVR, OnDemand... totally nuts.

And yes, I told them they should take it back and get a new box when they get it hooked up. But still, I was amazed!

they don't have to get a new box. I kept my box when I moved. The only problem is that because of this my next bill was $2000 because they charged us for buying the boxes even though we told them we were just keeping them when we move so we had to fight to get our boxes credited back to our account.

you cant always move boxes between regions... if your region is a Motorolla area then you move to a Cisco (SciAtl) area you'll have problems...

It may work for awhile, but at some point it will be detected as out-of-area and disabled.

I figured as much. I just was still amazed that it had the old channel mappings and they were still working.

$2000 for a cable box? A Satellite box costs less then that.

Hey comcast claims a SB5120 cable modem costs $470 when I can buy it for $29 here on sale... ran into that issue, I owned my modem and during the adelphia to comcast transition comcast told me I stole their modem and billed me for it... had to "prove" to them it was mine not theirs... when really they should have to prove to me it's theirs not mine....
