 [HSI] HSI: Any outlet?

Hi, I'm going to have a Charter tech come by in a couple weeks (earliest they could get someone out here...) to install HSI and phone service. What is involved in installing internet? Plugging in the cable modem, and connecting it to the computer? Do the techs have to install any 'special software'? Is the modem tied to a certain wall outlet in the house, or can I disconnect the modem and move it to another outlet later? I may want to move the modem from the basement to the upstairs later.

Also, what kind of modem do they install? Is it any good or should I get my own? Is there a preferred modem for this service, or a compatibility list?

Thanks for any answers!

No special software. The modem can be on any outlet, provided the signal levels are within specs.

Motorola SB5100 series seem to be the preferred modem, but just about any DOCSIS 1.1/2.0 compliant modem should be fine.

You may have to reconfigure the order of the splitter(s) if you switch modem locations. Generally they spit the incoming signal into HSI and Tv. Followed by another splitter on the TV side to cover all the TV outlets. This keeps the signal high to the HSI. When you move the modem just swap the cable from the TV secondary splitter to the HSI primary splitter.

You can, but you can't. As was stated, hsi needs a strong, clean signal. Most of the jacks in the house will be going thru splitters, maybe multiple splitters degrading the signal. You will most likely need to leave the modem on the line that charter installs specifically for it.

there are compatibility lists for modems, but generaly any docsis compliant modem will work just fine. Even when it's not listed on the compatiblility list. I now use a motorola sb5101 and it works great. Not sure what you will get from charter.

Will Charter provision a modem that's not on the compatibility list? Here, Cox HSI will not provision an unapproved modem.

they did for me. All they ask for when they provision it is the mac address.

Cox also requires the model and serial number of the modem.
