| [Other] Adding an access point to a SB5100 Cable Modem
Im getting cable from charter in a few days and need help suggestions please. From what ive read the sb5100 is one of the best modems. I need and access point to accomidate a few laptops in the house. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am unsure of compatibility or if that is even an issue. Thanks |

I've been using a Linksys WRT54G for 2 years now and can't complain.
What are you looking for in a wireless access point/router? Something with significant range? Faster than 802.11G speeds? |

| They are all limited in power by the FCC so if it can't get throught your walls and floors then it can't. I'd stay with Linksys or Dlink. I've read the placement and angle can be important in getting through walls and foors if it can at all. I've no experience with wireless but I think in the network settings you can see the strengh of any "wireless networks" available and have someone else adjust the antennas and postions so that you get the best signal strength. |

| reply to danstar25 If you cannot get the signal through to the second floor, it is usually not that big of a deal to run Ca6 from your router to another router (or access point) on the second floor. I like to put them in bathroom closets becuase you can usually just follow the plumbing without cutting any holes. I have also ran them through central heating ducts.
Edit: This may effect where you want the modem installed. |

| reply to danstar25 I got the D-Link DIR-655 wireless router. It supports draft N spec to. Its on the expensive side..like $100-120.
BUT I get wireless access pretty much down the end of my street, pretty impressive to me. |

| reply to danstar25 Thanks for all your responses. I have finally gotten moved in snd trying to get it set up. I need to ask another question from you. Its probably a dumb question but I have been on DSL for years and I own a 2wire 1000HG gateway, can i use it in conjunction with my sb5101 as a wireless accss point? |
