| Future of Gaming
I read the PC being the future of gaming. That article is a great read.
What I am really curious about is where does gaming go from here. We went from 2 player consoles to 4 player consoles at the same time lan games came up, now we are in the age of MMOGs. What other territory is there to discover.
I asked a co-worker of mine who plays a few games every now and then what he thought. His thoughts were (paraphrased), "Games of tomorrow are going to be more interactive. They have a console that you use your hands to do what you need to do (the Wii) with the game. I think that they are going to implement that in the computer games one day."
To tell you the truth, I never thought of that ...but I will say, it was very well said and very true. Where else do you think gaming will go; as I think that gaming isn't going to stop any time soon.
On a side note, I will still quit playing my PC game to get together and do a P&P session of Dungeons and Dragons. 3.5 editionedit: I have my DM, MM and PH of 4th edition. Not too impressed with it. |

| reply to KCP i actually thought about the, "virtual reality" worlds that we are coming to. but we aren't coming to them, we are already there. look at WoW, Eve, and any other mmorpg. these are all thriving communities of people who divulge in the fact that they are someone they aren't. i, myself, am guilty of this. not saying its bad, but the age of "Virtual Reality" is here. i for one, am for it. i believe my co-worker put it best, its just going to be more interactive. |

| reply to KCP I think what would really advance PC gaming (and gaming in general) is the advent of light-weight low-cost head-mounted displays. Of all the advances made in computing, the monitor is the one area that has lagged behind everything else, in terms of performance. The gaming experience is completely centered around the display. Everything, where you play, how you play, is totally tied to a device that has only seen evolutionary changes, nothing revolutionary. If you could make the viewing device portable, while still covering the same kind of field of view as provided by a large screen, you could unleash a huge potential for gaming advancement. |

| reply to KCP Intelligent voice interaction responses. This is how I see it all heading towards.
Simply put, imagine playing Knights of the Old Republic, say, and actually talking to a character (using a mic) and have intelligent responses come back at you. Or perhaps Half-Life? The ever silent Gordon Freeman can interact with characters on a much more personal level.
This is something that is lacking in games/stories on computers, the personal interaction. While KOTOR had set responses to reply with, imagine a much more open game. Or with Half-life, you can finally break the silence barrier and develop much deeper feelings with your choices and the characters.
To do this would be incredibly difficult and I have no idea how, but I can see it happening one day. -- As quiet as a fish.. |

WoW was the game that they named specifically. so we are coming closer and closer to the age of head-mounted displays. just not there yet. |

| reply to KCP The future of gaming will either be the Holodeck (if things go well) or a post-apocalyptic landscape filled with mutants hacking bits off each other (if things go badly).
I thought everyone knew this. |
