Modem connects with USB but not ethernet

I'm trying to get my brothers modem to connect with ethernet instead of USB. Ethernet controller is active, but cannot get connected for some reason. I've tried the standard diagnostics (new connection using ICS wizard, cycling modem, etc). He's on Suddenlink here in NW Louisiana, using an Arris modem model TM502G. XP Pro on the box.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

before turning on Internet Connection Sharing, let's work on getting the connection to work to the modem.

First, make sure you're working with the USB *unplugged* from the modem. I'm pretty sure the modem will not send data over both the USB and Ethernet ports.

In your Network Connections, find the connection that relates to your ethernet port on the computer. First things first, right click and attempt to "repair connection". Make sure the cable is connected from the computer to the modem, of course

If this doesn't work, try a new ethernet cable. I know it sounds silly, but it's worth mentioning that ethernet cables look like phone cables on steroids. The connector is about 1.5x wider than a phone connector and will fit very snugly into the ethernet port. Believe it or not, it is extremely common to find that a user has used a regular phone cable in place of ethernet. The connector and jack will indeed work together, but not snugly, and certainly won't transfer data.

Some modems come with both a "crossover" cable as well as a "straight-thru" cable. Crossover cables are typically yellow, orange, or red, whereas straight-thru are typically blue, beige/white, or green. Try each if you have them, as some computer and modem combinations prefer one over the other. Some companies clearly mark which is which, but most don't.

If none of these things help let me know and we'll work on troubleshooting the actual ports on the modem/pc.

BTW, I have no idea who you are, so please don't interpret any of this as being condescending

DJ, I didn't take any of it as condescending, I appreciate the help!

As it turns out, the modem needed to be unplugged from the a/c, and the battery backup removed to affect the change. Quite simple, but 100% effective.

I was then able to hook up my brothers brand-new, spiffy Linksys wireless-N router (Madden anyone?) LOL

Thanks again DJ. I'll now raise my ice-cold, adult beverage in your honor. Cheers!

Most (perhaps all) semi-modern equipment is auto-negotiating, eliminating the distinction of straight-through and crossover cables.
