| Another slow network
I'm wondering if anyone can perhaps point me in the right direction. I'm copying files from a wireless connected machine to a wired machine. All of the folders are shared. The wireless machine is running XP sp3, the wired machine is running Vista Ult x64. The router is an old WRT54G and the wireless card is also a linksys, I'm not sure which model. The wireless computer shows connected at 54Mb/s, the wired machine is connected at 100Mb/s.
Why then am I only getting between 3 - 4 percent network usage and transfer speeds like the picture above? There are no other computers on this network and the signal strength is excellent. I mean, I know it's wireless, but jeeze. I get 20Mb/s transferring to/from my old laptop.
I apologize for asking the same question that has been asked so many times already. If the answer is get another router, I know this sucker is old, but it seems to be behaving differently between computers, making me think it might be something with the boxes themselves.

Instead of reading signal strength from the Linksys (or Windows - which?) WiFi manager, how about you get NetStumbler, and objectively measure signal strength and some approximation of signal to noise ratio. And see what neighbours you may be sharing the channel with. »networking.nitecruzr.net/2006/06···ent.html
Make sure that you are running just one WiFi manager - pick one, and un install any others. Do this with great care. »networking.nitecruzr.net/2006/01···ifi.html
And make sure that you have the latest drivers from Linksys. »networking.nitecruzr.net/2005/08···ase.html
And how about some history of your network. How long has it been in use? How long has this computer been in use? How long have you noted this problem? Have you made any changes to this computer, recently? »networking.nitecruzr.net/2005/06···-in.html »networking.nitecruzr.net/2005/08···ial.html -- Cheers, Chuck MS-MVP 2005-2008 [Windows - Desktop Experience] Nitecruzr Dot Net |

| reply to tcharp It was the windows signal strength that stated excellent. There is only one neighbor with any signal strength to speak of around me, but I have been wondering about the fact that virtually everyone seems to be on channel 11. I shall check out the NetStumbler deal as well.
There is only Windows WiFi manager on the XP machine.
I haven't updated drivers from Linksys on the old (XP) machine for quite some time. I guess there never seemed to be need until now.
This small network has been setup for many years. This computer has been connected via wireless since Feb '07 when I built the Vista box.
Ah changes. I did seem to have a router hic-up a few nights ago. Probably brought on by some laptop connect issues I was "fixing". I thought everything was back to normal. Both wireless machines are connecting to the network, but slowly. Until I started messing with the laptop connectivity, I hadn't noticed any problems.
The XP machine doesn't really do much but these days but I did recently put SP3 on there.
Thanks for you thoughts, I'll check out NetStumbler and, very likely move to another channel. With everyone on 11, there are plenty of others to choose from.

OK, a Vista system involved. Missed that. »networking.nitecruzr.net/2006/12···ectivity

| A quick site survey shows that currently, of the 4 systems broadcasting in range, 1 is on channel 1 and 3 are on channel 6. I'm still on channel 11. I know very little about the wireless card in the XP machine. It has never really presented any problems.
The Vista box is hard wired to the router, not using wireless. |

So look at the Vista Connectivity issue, which is WiFi agnostic. »networking.nitecruzr.net/2006/12···ectivity -- Cheers, Chuck MS-MVP 2005-2008 [Windows - Desktop Experience] Nitecruzr Dot Net |

| reply to cacroll I have done so. It is a very interesting read. I'll probably get more out of it when I re-read it today as it's not 3am. Your website presents a wealth of knowledge, much of which I believe I will use. I'm looking into the broadcast flag but I'm not sure exactly what my router supports. It can be somewhat temperamental when assigning an address to the Vista box.
