The fact that the traceroute is reaching giganews network, leads me to suspect something on there end. What occurs if they attempt to trace to your IP?
I agree. If the packets are getting to g3-16.gw2.dca.giganews.com it is likely a routing issue at telia.net or giganews.com.

I had 3 different support people at Giganews looking at this, and they concluded there was nothing in their network that was causing the problem--I know that's often a "standard reply", but Giganews is pretty good, they have gone the distance before when I had issues. They also mentioned that several other Mediacom subscribers had reported the same thing to them. I'm at work now or I'd post a reverse traceroute. A real puzzle. It started within the last 2 days, after the first day it was OK the next morning, then began again yesterday PM. I'll see what happens tonight. Thank you all for your replies.

Would you PM me your MacId or CPE IP Address?

Will do Bainch; I will be home in about 5 hours and will shoot you my MAC ID then along with a current trace.

BTW, unlike B_W's experience the problem was the same whether I tried connecting normally to one of their 3 regular ports (21, 80, 119) or via SSL/Stunnel to 563.

The latest as of 6pm tonight: while I still cannot ping news.giganews.com, or connect with my newsreader via normal means, connections using the Giganews Accelerator, with either header compression only or compression plus SSL, are now connecting! Those Mediacom folks with Giganews, try downloading and using the Accelerator (be sure to set up your newsreader correctly--point to localhost:119 and disable any native SSL in the reader), and let us know if this is the "still odd" fix. Of course, still doesn't explain why no ping .

I just checked here again and I still have the exact opposite results that Sveakul has. The only way I can use Giganews is to NOT use the Accelerator. I tried with both Newsleecher and Thunderbird. Strange huh?

Just received an email from Giganews support that they are "working with your provider" to fix the issue, so that's good news that both are in direct contact now.
