| [Cable HSI] Surfboard DHCP
We have the surfboad 5100 here and use a router behind it but when we tried using a switch the modem's DHCP apparently did not work. According to documentation I found and the modem's GUI it can pass out 32 IPs but only one of the computers received an IP and it was the public IP. Does the DHCP work on these modems or does something have to be done to make it work? Not that it matters because we have a router but I'd like to know that if the router fails we can use a switch (because I have one laying around) and still be able to have all our computers connect. |

| If I understand your question correctly, and your setup, and if you're only paying for the normal HSD service, your experience is correct. You are only given one IP address from Mediacom. I think most people (here) would use a router instead of a switch to accomplish what you are desiring. |

| reply to kremithefrog I have to agree with Turbocpe here, you are only paying for one IP address so you will only get one from that modem. The switch will not work like you want with only the one IP address. If the router fails you will need another router, or purchase additional IPs @ $5 each from Mediacom.
However, since your router assigns IP addresses separately from the modem, you could put the switch behind the router if you needed to, but to the OP, sorry mate, it won't work. |

I misunderstood you at first I guess, BUT the 5100 will NOT act as a router and assign private ip address(while it has internet connectivity). I've never seen one yet that did. |

| reply to kremithefrog When I look at my own Surfboard documents: quote: The SURFboard cable modem can be used as a gateway to the Internet by a maximum of 32 users on a Local Area Network (LAN). When the Cable Modem is disconnected from the Internet, users on the LAN can be dynamically assigned IP Addresses by the Cable Modem DHCP Server. These addresses are assigned from an address pool which begins with 192.168.100.11 and ends with 192.168.100.42. Statically assigned IP addresses for other devices on the LAN should be chosen from outside of this range
I bold the part I believe is relevant. |
