[MN] No route to news.giganews.com?

Today and yesterday I have been unable to ping or connect to news.giganews.com; never had this problem before. Giganews advises that many Mediacom people are having the same issue, and that it has nothing to do with their servers--can anyone confirm/comment on this??? Below is a traceroute:

What gives??? No problem connecting at work, off Mediacom, so definitely is a Mediacom issue.

I've been having intermittent problems connecting to their servers here in IL.

When I run a tracrt, it pretty much looks the same as yours. I hope this is corrected soon.

The fact that the traceroute is reaching giganews network, leads me to suspect something on there end. What occurs if they attempt to trace to your IP?

I agree. If the packets are getting to g3-16.gw2.dca.giganews.com it is likely a routing issue at telia.net or giganews.com.

Hi Everyone,

Same problem here. At home (Mediacom) I get no response from GigaNews. Here at work I am able to ping the news.giganews.com host. I guess we'll wait and see what happens. I first noticed it yesterday afternoon here in IL.

I had 3 different support people at Giganews looking at this, and they concluded there was nothing in their network that was causing the problem--I know that's often a "standard reply", but Giganews is pretty good, they have gone the distance before when I had issues. They also mentioned that several other Mediacom subscribers had reported the same thing to them. I'm at work now or I'd post a reverse traceroute. A real puzzle. It started within the last 2 days, after the first day it was OK the next morning, then began again yesterday PM. I'll see what happens tonight. Thank you all for your replies.

I don't know if this helps any or not.

Reverse Trace from GN site.

I have been communicating with Giganews techs for the past 3 days about not being able to connect. They insist that the problem is not on their end.

I use their Giganews Accelerator and that is when I have the problem. If I disable the Accelerator and use "news.giganews.com" I have no problem. If I use "localhost" to enable the Accelerator then I get this error:

Unable to connect / authenticate server: giganews @ localhost (599 Proxy Error: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond 216.196.97.149:563 (599)).

Will do Bainch; I will be home in about 5 hours and will shoot you my MAC ID then along with a current trace.

BTW, unlike B_W's experience the problem was the same whether I tried connecting normally to one of their 3 regular ports (21, 80, 119) or via SSL/Stunnel to 563.

Hi Everyone,

Mine also was never able to connect with or without accelerator and on any port. Everything going to news.giganews.com is getting dropped.

While I've had no luck getting to the US servers the Europe server "news-europe.giganews.com" seems work. We may be able to get by temporarily using that server address until it gets sorted out.

This worked for me but it should only be a temporary solution.

@mchsi.com

Have the same problem here in Florida. Although the Giganews staff may be good, I am disappointed that they told me to straighten it out with my ISP (not their problem).

Seems to me that Giganews is the party who should be contacting Mediacom since they (Giganews) may loose business and /or reputation.

The latest as of 6pm tonight: while I still cannot ping news.giganews.com, or connect with my newsreader via normal means, connections using the Giganews Accelerator, with either header compression only or compression plus SSL, are now connecting! Those Mediacom folks with Giganews, try downloading and using the Accelerator (be sure to set up your newsreader correctly--point to localhost:119 and disable any native SSL in the reader), and let us know if this is the "still odd" fix. Of course, still doesn't explain why no ping .

I just checked here again and I still have the exact opposite results that Sveakul has. The only way I can use Giganews is to NOT use the Accelerator. I tried with both Newsleecher and Thunderbird. Strange huh?

Just received an email from Giganews support that they are "working with your provider" to fix the issue, so that's good news that both are in direct contact now.

I ran a trace route on another connection today and the trace route doesn't make it all the way through, can ping the server. It's probably their problem not mediacom.

I am also having these same problems in Iowa. Started around Friday night, worked for a little bit on Sunday (though it was much slower than usual). Giganews tech says that it is Mediacom's problem. Anyone try calling the useless Mediacom techs yet? In addition, our download speeds have dropped to about a third of what they were on Friday.

I had been trying to fix this at home as well. I had my router clone my laptop for DHCP through mediacom which chaned my external IP address after i rebooted the modem. I am connected and downloading from giganews at 2.3MB/sec.

Good luck

Is anyone still having difficulties? We've been working with GigaNews but haven't found anything (at least on our side) to explain the issue. We've done traceroutes from every MN CMTS and several different subnets without difficulty.
