question about cable boxes (4240 HDC)

just wanted to ask, the box earlier said ---- and had to have an operator reset it. would rebooting it help or does it have th be manually reauthorized?

we lost cable for about 2 hours last night and it didn't receive it's nightly ping.

I could be wrong but a reset should work, If I understand correctly the box has to talk back to cox while booting up to authorize itself get any applicable updates if necessary etc.

A DHCT will go into brick (----) for a few reasons:
1) Non-pay disconnect
2) remove of entitlements (account change)
3) loss of EMM's because it couldn't hear the forward data carrier for 20 or more days.

We try to "hit" every set top at least once every 30 days. With 170,000 of them on the plant, it would be impossible to do every night. A reboot typically will not fix whatever caused that box to lose it's authorization on the network.

If a set top was successfully booted and recieved it's entitlements, it theoretically can be "deaf" to the controller for up to and slightly beyond 20 days before it needs to be refreshed.

Why is that the case? if the account is kept up to date why does it have to be pinged?

Lots of reasons.

Non-payment
Code changes (addition/change of services in billing)
New channels and features
Quality control (missed codes in billing)
Sometimes you get a box that "walks" away from the head-end for whatever reason, and it needs to have it's privledges revoked.

I'm sure there are a few others that our billing system administrators could come up with, but those are the biggies. The boxes are also pretty autonomous if there is a serious failure, so keeping them up-to-date is just one more way they can continute to operate at a minimal level without help from the billing interface or the DNCS.

Thats why i just let mine sit for a half hour unplugged hoping i wouldn't have to deal with them on the phone[always frustrating]

I'm beginning to think a weekly unplugging of my box is in order. (SA Explorer 8240HDC DVR) The DVR is always going wacky. Yesterday on History HD and today on Discovery HD, I set it to record a show. The record light comes on, and I change the channel to watch it and it's just blank.. black.. no audio even. So, I watch the show on the SD channel. When the show is over, I go back to Discovery HD and it's back on.

So, I unplug the thing.. when I checked the recorded programs list, the show it supposedly just recorded is not listed. Do a test record of a show and it's working again.

Blank as is grey?

That happens here too... Cox phone support solution is to pay $30 to get another box that will do the same thing.

if cox actually upgrades the IPG software (which they won't) i think 99 percent of the problems will go away.

their DVR is crap. the reason why i have it is because replay tv is no more, tivo sucks and there are no affordable dvr systems that record in HD.
