| Am I understanding this correctly?
I am switching from bell to shaw at the end of July because I am tired of bells billing department.
I called shaw and ask what happens when I go over the bandwidth limit? I will be getting 100gb a month. So I ask what if I went 105. She said I would get a call about my usage.
I then asked what if I when 101gb the next month. She said I would be deactivated and have to call in to discuss upgrading to a faster service, and if I continue they would discontinue service.
Is she correct? I understand if I was going going 10gb+ above my limit, but 6gb over 2 months, isn't that a little extreme?

@shawcable.net | They will not call if you over a bit like that. Go over say 10-25gig and often then they will do something. |

| Shaw first line reps can be pretty bad, then again Tbaytel is the worest I found for lying, misleading, and saying anything to make the client feel like home, but when it comes to actually doing what they say it's normally a he said this and she said that type of thing.
Shaw isn't as bad as Bell, however Shaw doesn't have one level of upper management you can call, if things get really bad.
I've downloaded 200 gb's in a month on Shaw and had no issue, plus until shaw gets there Client Internet Usage meters up for clients to check, they have no grounds to cancel anyone's service by and means. |

Wellllll, let's be fair. There's a difference of going over by 25-30 GB. But once you're over by 50+ GB odds are you have a good idea you are probably over your limit.
It's kind of like speeding. Most people couldn't tell if they are doing 58, 60 or 63 in a 60 kph zone. But only the truly stupid could do 100 kph in a 60 zone and not know it.
So I don't know if I'd rely too much on the fact that Shaw's Internet Usage isn't up and running to save me if I am really sucking up the bandwidth. But I agree, if it's only a bit over (say 10% or so) you should probably be able to pull the "I'm sorry officer, was I speeding downloading too much?" routine with Shaw's bandwidth police and get away with it. |

| reply to ErikRP While I agree that if you go a few GB over your cap, most likely Shaw shouldn't notice you .... but there's no need for the original poster slagging the Shaw customer service reps for sticking to their "script".
Let's go back to the speeding example in the post above ... if you walk into the local police station and ask them how much faster than 50K (in an urban zone) you have to go before being tagged for speeding, they're NOT going to tell you that you can speed 10% in excess of the limit. They're going to tell you that the limit is 50kph and THAT is in good weather and driving conditions.
I actually work as a supervisor in a customer service call center and that's one of our biggest problems ... if people don't like the answer they get the first time, they ask again or call back 10 minutes later to ask someone else. They'll keep doing this until they get fed up or hear the answer THEY WANT TO HEAR not the answer that's given to them. Then when the sh*t hits the fan they claim we never warned them.
Stick to your 100GB cap and you won't have any problems from Shaw and you won't have to keep wondering just exactly when that first warning e-mail is going to arrive. |

I have used Shaw for years and some months I have been well above my cap and other months just a little. To stretch out the car metaphor just a little bit further, if you are driving a Mustang you will get a lot more notice from police than if you're in a minivan. And so with Shaw you will get more notice if you are a regular abuser of the cap, which is why they give you access to the bandwidth monitor in the first place. If you slip over a bit the odd month odds are good no one will say anything. Do it regularly and/or go over by a lot and of course you're going to get warned.
And for the record, the routine is normally you will first receive a warning by email. If you don't respond within a few days they will suspend service. If/When you email or call them back they will turn on your service on the condition that you watch your usage. If you go over again (or sometimes even if you use a lot in a short period, say you use 75% of your monthly bandwidth in 3 days) they will normally shut you down and tell you that you have to move up to the next tier of service.
I'm going from memory - this info is in the Shaw FAQ - but it's the way Shaw normally operates. Of course humans are involved in the process so there can be some discretion. If you are on a node that is already quite saturated you might be noticed faster than if you share a node with 3 people who only use their connection for email. |

| LOL Nope. No connection whatsoever, other than I've been with them for years. And I've run afoul of their bandwidth restrictions so between my own experiences and - as I said earlier - the Shaw FAQ, I am pretty confident telling you what I said.
Half the people here could have told you the same thing I'm sure. |
