I can say with confidence that the top two free firmware contenders for the WRT54 lineup are DD-WRT and Tomato. Unfortunately for you Tomato does not support WRT54GS v5 (see »en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Tomato_Fir···_devices)

DD-WRT does support remote logging which is probably what you would want to use (stores logs to target PC on network).
