[speed/latency] Verizon upload speed 13kb/s vs. Japan upload spe

I am extremely disappointed with the service that I receive from Verizon. My service allows for an download/upload speed of 750/128kbs. Three days ago, I did a speed test and got an upload speed of 13kbs. This type of rubbish speed have been going on for several months. At that level of upload speed, I am crippled on the internet and cannot upload data without serious risk of critical dropped information.

We'd like to think that here in the US, we are technologically advanced, but the truth is that Verizon allows its customers to operate in the stone age. Download/upload speeds are much higher in Europe and Japan. These high speeds can be observed on graphs here: »www.speedtest.net/global.php

I also find it very strange that I can get higher upload/download speeds to data centers in Maidenhead, UK (674kbs download & 120kb/s upload from ~3,500 miles away) than to a data center in Clifton, NJ (698kbs download & 30kbs upload from less than 100 miles away).

Maybe if the American executives spent more time on developing the infrastructure - instead of pocketing every penny; then American startup businesses would have a fair chance of competing in the global marketplace. And before someone from Verizon argues that this is the lowest package for consumers, it's still NO excuse.

Well, why don't we help you fix that upload then? Reboot your modem and post up your line stats.

Hi Smith6612,

Thanks for the offer to help; but I have been suffering from Verizon's poor service for several months. I have rebooted my modem so many times, that I can't count. I did a speed test in March and got upload speeds in the 300kb/ps range (and I thought that was pretty bad). I did a speed test tonight (just now, as I type this post), to see if anything has improved. At 9:37 p.m. on a Saturday night, I'm getting a 740 kb/ps upload and 38 kb/ps upload.

I think that one of the problems is that Verizon says that I am only supposed to be getting "up to 128kb/ps". So if I get test results between 13-38 on the upload, their technical support staff will say that my line is testing perfectly fine for speed. (Therefore, to the extent that I was getting up to 300 kb/ps in March was apparently a mistake).

I think Verizon's position is ridiculous. At the speeds that I'm now getting, their internet service is worst than 56k dial-up service - but at double the price. According to the following site:
to be considered DSL high speed, I should be getting upload speeds from 128-768kb/ps (not upload speeds from 0-128). So basically, I am being totally ripped off by Verizon. They keep saying that my upload speeds will improve - if I purchase a more expensive service, but I'm reluctant to do that, since they are not even providing the minimum service at present.

I appreciate your offer, but I'm finished with Verizon. The first opportunity I get, I'll be moving over to cable.

Ah; so you are just here to vent. There is a forum for that, as well:

Thanks NormanS,

I didn't know that there was an actual forum dedicated for that. I thought that all issues and discussions related to speed/latency were to be placed here.

I originally hoped that someone could advise me on how to improve my situation. However, when I checked my speed - just before the second posting, and saw that there was no improvement; I decided to move on.

I am also a moderator on a very popular board; and know how annoying it is to find posts in the wrong place. Please forgive me.

No, I think you were here just to rant. You mad your decision to leave Verizon before you posted your original message. Smith6612 See Profile offered help to you and you turned him down. There are numerous very knowledgeable people on this forum that have helped countless people such as yourself over the years. Much more help than you will ever get from level 1 support at Verizon.

The decision is yours and it looks like you have made it.

Hi ImaDuffer264,

You are free to think what you like about WHY I chose to post. However,...
You are incorrect to suggest that I wrongfully blew off Smith6612's kind offer to help. This is because you haven't carefully read my posts. After countless hours with both the technical support at Verizon and Belkin, I don't believe that I have a technical/hardware problem which rebooting can resolve. I had already done two modem reboots the previous day, while working the entire working day with both Verizon and Belkin technicians. In fact, on Friday, I spent a full day with Verizon, and my problem was again escalated to a "specialist". We did the reboot procedure - and nothing improved. They looked at the many speed tests which were run from both dslreports, speedtest, and various other data centers. In every single instance, the test results were sub-par, and "expert" still said that the matter was closed because the line tested fine with Verizon. Clearly, rebooting the modem is a procedure that doesn't work.

You are correct to suggest that my initial post should have been posted in the Rants section of the board, if I am unwilling to accept help. Perhaps I would have done just that - if I had known that section of the board existed. I have every right and reason to rant because I'm paying for high speed service - but getting worse that dialup service. I think Verizon has intentionally dropped the quality of its high speed service as a policy and as a tactic to push people into paying more for a true high speed connection.

I'm planning to move over to cable service in September. In the meantime, if you have something helpful to offer (a new technical trick to boost my speed or a linkedin connection to someone empowered to change my provisioned upload rate), then I am all ears. If you can't do that, then please just accept my apology (post 6) and move on to a post where you can be more helpful.

Well first off yes, I did read all of your posts and all the replies that went along with them. And yes, I do agree that rebooting a gazillion times is not going to solve any problems you may be having. If you go back and look at the suggestion smith6612 made it was to get a fresh reboot of the modem then to post up your modem stats so it could be determined if there was anything that could be done to help you.

If you don't know how to find the stats in the modem someone here can help you.

You will probably have a better chance getting your problem fixed here than talking to the level 1 Verizon techs. Most of the people here are just trying to help and hey..it's free!

Rebooting your 'Router/modem' is only a small fraction of the story. Perhaps the router has issues and needs to be replaced, or it's not set up correctly. Perhaps your hard line or DSLAM has issues; cheeze if you have issues, you need to go past more than two items.....Just a thought!

Calling tech support is almost worthless these days, customer support is in the toilet, but honing in on isolated issues without the whole picture may be the real problem you are having.

Do a line test, try another router, ask neighbours if they are having problems; it's not an isolated world unless you make it so. That's not to say you don't have problems, obviously you do ~Checked your NIC card, your PC config? The list goes on.....

Hi Jodokast96, dvd536,
I don't know why this thread was moved. It was never in the Verizon Direct section of the forum, which is where members can chat one-to-one with a Verizon agent. The forum where it was initially located clearly states that it is "A forum for the discussion of topics related to Verizon Online DSL systems and services and general topics related to Verizon Online internet services." It would have been nice to get more feedback on how members feel about the speeds that other internet users are getting in other places - compared to Verizon. (I keep having visions of some spammer in a third world country having no problem accessing the internet, and filling up my Verizon email with junk letters; while I can't access the internet for legitimate reasons.) In any case, a moderator moved it because I didn't specifically ask for any help. So here we are.

Hi ImaDuffer264,
I think that we've started our new friendship on the wrong foot. I was sure that my thread would die when it was moved. I'm glad that I checked tonight. I'm thrilled to find that you and other members are still interesting in helping.

As for your suggestion, I've never searched my modem stats. I've always allowed Verizon to do all the checking from their end. In fact, this last time, I allowed them free access to my system (via remote assistance), so that their personnel could check and test any and everything that needed more scrutiny. I was never told anything about what they may have found.

I'd also like to see my modem stats. If you don't post instructions over the next few days, I'll contact Smith6612 by private message and hope that he's still willing to give a hand.

Kiwi,
Thanks for your input. The router is a Belkin Wireless. It is the second within 2 years. Belkin promptly sent a new one, for free, when they detected some flaw in my initial purchase. We've tested the speed with and without the wireless router. Connecting directly to the modem did not improve the speed. If my hard line or DSLAM has issues, neither Verizon or Belkin has informed me.

darcilicious,
Thanks for letting me know about that section of the board. However, I think I'd like to have some new hard data in my hand before contacting them. I haven't changed my mind about moving over to cable in September. However, that doesn't mean that I should have to suffer all of July and August.

It was moved here because there was never any request for help, only complaining, a little about Verizon and more about the general state of broadband in the US. Not to mention that you said you were dumping Verizon anyway.

If you have the 768/128 kbps package from verizon and are only seeing 13 kB/s upload then you are having an excellent dsl signal , it isn`t verizon`s fault then nor is your router`s fault.

Your upload speed as you stated is 128 kbps, which if you divide by 8 equals 16 kB/s (what it shows in your status window.) minus overhead equals 13 kB/s.

Unfortunately if you want more speed , you`ll have to pay more for an either faster dsl speed package or cable line.

I believe is not really the fault of the common people to think that in the USA you guys are the most technologically advanced country in the world, in the USA you guys are heavily influenced by the media to believe that. Don`t get me wrong, you do have in the USA a lot of technology but in internet speeds the Japanese , south Koreans and most of Europe are far far ahead of you guys.

The slowest internet package I can get from my cable company at this moment is 1mbps/550 kbps ( I have it and I pay 80 dollars per month but it includes phone, digital cabletv with premium channels and the net). They also have available but it costs extra 2mpbs/550 kbps (plus $20usd) and 4mpbs/550 kbps(plus $30).

From my local telco I can get Dsl up to 6mpbs/1mpbs ($100USD x month including a phone line) and from the other telco I can get up to 20 mpbs/1mpbs DSL2, plus iptv ( about 150 for their triple play , tv, internet and phone). There are 3 cellphone companies offering 3g internet but it is up to 700 kbps only.(costs $50 USD x month)

All of this is in South America (CHile) so this little chart will vary depending where you are located.

Hope it gives a picture about the Internet in a place far from the USA. (at least 8 hours non stop away by plane from Miami or over 12 hours from NYC)
