[Serious] Hard life in the islands taking toll on family

Well, most of you know that my significant other is overseas in The Philippines. You know that life there is hard because there are very few jobs, things except low quality food and junky housing are expensive (a computer that will sell here for $400 will sell there for at least $1000), and because of the incessant heat, humidity, and poor food people end up dieing very young by US standards. As most of you know, I have lost both "mother" and "father" "in Law".

Well, my girl's brother's wife's mom just had a major stroke. Fortunately, she is getting at least some of the care she needs. A family member works and someone overseas is helping too, but my significant other has seen one health emergency after another over the last 3 years. My girl is currently being treated for a rat bite, and me, tick bites! Seems that health is the one thing that really takes a toll on human happiness if you know what I mean.

If you have a spare moment today and tomorrow, will you consider a prayer or positive thought toward Love's mom? Love is one of the sweetest people I know and to see her suffer seeing her mom, at only 60, in mortal danger (sure, here in the US a stroke isn't a necessarily death sentence, but this is another place), saddens me.

Thank you for your time, and sorry for a negative sounding post, but just asking for some positive energy from those of you that are willing.

God Bless you all.

Thanks guys. I don't want anyone thinking I am griping, we all know things are tough all over, just look at the price of fuel!

I just found out that she (the mom) cannot talk, so things aren't too good. I talked to her (Love) briefly and she was really choked up, I sure hope her mom comes through!

Prayers and good thoughts headed their way and you're right, we take so much for granted here, the least of which is health care.

Glad to pray for this. I can't even imagine anybody thinking of a request for prayer as anything other than a sincere call for help and understanding. Prayer costs us nothing yet we have everything to gain from it.

Well, she is on oxygen and still can't talk, and they are trying to find a way to pay for a CT Scan. Things don't look good right now. Keep 'em coming guys. All I am asking for is prayer and mojo, just to be clear.

You got it...it is very difficult to have worries for loved ones that are physically far away...I also hope that you can find some peace of mind, hard as that may be.

You got it my friend. Sorry to hear about this, but, unfortunately this is the way most of humanity lives. Best wishes and I'll send some positive mojo and prayers your way.

So far it looks like she will live, but she cannot talk or walk. So tragic for someone in such a place.

Thank you all, your caring thoughts and prayers have certainly helped immensely.

Sigh...I am sorry to hear this. I have had a couple of family members with major strokes, and I all too well understand both the frustrations for the individual, as well as the difficulty in assisting the family member in having a good quality of life (although it can be done!)

I wish both her, and of course you and your wife, the best in dealing with this situation.

When my father in law had a major stroke, the most difficult thing for me to deal with, and keep in mind, was that his basic cognitive skills were actually quite unchanged. Although he could not speak well, at all, he could express himself, if one took the time to observe...

Unfortuately, when one can not speak, there is a tendency to inadvertantly "downgrade" his/her intellectual capacity, and I must admit, that I had to frequently remind myself that this still was the same man that I had a great deal of respect for, and that his mental acuity still was not to be under-estimated.

Charlie (my father in law) passed away some years back now, but I truly believe that we (his wife, my wife, and I) helped him maintain a decent quality of life over those last years...
