Because it is a "punishment"/"penalty"/"revenge" or whatever you want to call it. Without punishing those who do damage to others, then people will then take the law in to their own hands.
So what is preferable? Locking him up or have those he harmed take revenge by shooting his sorry ass. For society, punishment serves a valid purpose - it stops people from taking revenge personally.

Hob Why is it a shame? Just because he was an old man when he committed the crimes doesn't me he should be treated any differently than if he was 20 years old. Like the other guy said, don't do the crime if you can't do the time. It's a shame because what does putting an 83 year old man in prison accomplish? It would have been more fitting to simply confiscate all of his personal/family assets and leave him penniless, but free. Now YOUR tax dollars are being used to keep an 83 year old man behind bars.
Also have you ever visited someone in a low security prison similar to the one John is housed in at Butner? I have and I'll tell you right now while it's no vacation it's certainly nothing like any prison you may be thinking of.
So now tell me, what does it accomplish keeping him behind bars? I assure you it's not "justice".
