| laptop finally died... need some advice/help
Ok, a while back I was the klutz and dropped my IBM A31p 2653-R4u laptop. I cracked it pretty good. GOt some bids to fix it for $100 but I have a feeling most it's going to fix is going to be just the board cause the case is cracked as well.
My thoughts..... It's scrap. Best I could hope for would be if it's a board and find a change and pray I can find another IBM a31p to swap a whole outer shell with.
Now I have quite a few docking stations around here that were for the IBM a31p (a 2631, and a few port replicators). I even also have the IBM dvd burner with the laptop.
Question is, I wouldn't mind upgrading a little bit as long as I could keep the dvd burner and such.
Yes, I realize I could buy a brand new machine, sure. But if I could maybe take some of the parts out of this one to fix up another one I figure why not.
The processor, hard drive, memory, dvd burner and that stuff is working just fine.

| A similar thing happened to me too. In my case, I think it was because I didn't give the A30 enough ventilation cause I slept with it on a bed. At the Phoenix Airport (Dec 2006) it just died there as I was trying to capitalize on the free wi-fi. I went on eBay and rebuilt an A31 I was able to obtain, including puting in the wireless antenna.

If you know the mobo is still good, then that is what I would do.

| Yea I am not sure what type of shape the MOBO is in, it still boots and still puts out a image, however if there is damage it's probably going to be more than it would be to replace. Plus I would still need a A31p 2653-R4U case so I could put a new MOBO in.
So my thought was to see if I could find another A31p (which hasn't went well in searches)
I guess what I would not mind finding out is what laptops are compatible with the 2631 docking station I have? I am not sure what the next brand level up from the IBM A31p would be. I thought it went to X next but I could be wrong as well.

| Any 2652, 2654 case would work. The difference on the mobos is whether it will be PC133 or DDR266 and the CPU.

The HMM should be able to tell you what will work, but I am certain you can drop your mobo into an A30 case and not have any problems.
