| Buying a new ASUS notebook
I have been using an ASUS notebook A6VG and never encountered an issue with it. I am planning to upgrade to a newer lappie (mine is already 3 years old) and wondering which model would you recommend me. My budget is around $1500 AUD.
What do you think of these ones I found on eBay?

In addition, I was thinking of having installed XP Pro (with Linux which I would take care myself) and probably have to negotiate that with the store. Vista, no-no thing, thank you!

For that amount of money you can get that notebook, which is definatly the best notebook buy right now. I don't know why you don't want Vista, probably uneducated opinion, but having a store install XP for you is going to be a rip-off. | | Psicop More human than human Premium join:2005-12-21

| reply to Psicop Thanks but is that notebook better than an ASUS one?
Is Vista really stable because I read different opinions?
They only offer Vista Home Premium. Rubbish, I rather get Ultimate if I ever use that OS.
Are you biased towards the link you provided?
I appreciate your help anyway.

| As a 3d-party opinion? If you plan to do any gaming, then McHart is right! Both the highlighted ASUS notebooks use Intel integrated X3100 graphics...not at all appropriate for gaming...I can't believe that the ads made such a claim!
Now, they may well be fine general-purpose notebooks, but, IMHO, vastly over-priced based on configuration. ASUS may build good quality notebooks, but they aren't very competitive based on features with other brands...
As far as Vista goes? You don't even want to get me started! The whining and hoopla over Vista is downright silly!
Vista is every bit as stable as XP, and over time, it will be even more so. Most Vista problems fall into driver incompatibilities...which will not be an issue on a new notebook, designed for Vista, and older software compatibility...which EVERY new OS runs into the occasional issues with. Fact is that Vista hit the streets with the longest hardware/software compatibility list of any released OS...but since there is more "legacy" hardware/software around than ever, there will still be some holes...
Why would you necessarily want Ultimate over Home Premium? Very few users have any need whatsoever with Ultimate's extra features. I would read the features very, very carefully, and determine of Ultimate actually gives you anything that you need over Home Premium. I never did buy XP Pro...got it at work, and it offerd me nothing of substance over what I got with XP Home.
Frankly, I have long used, and liked XP, but I would never say that I "prefer" it over Vista. I only use XP on my older, slower boxes that really, Vista was not designed around. If you have even a modest dual-core class CPU, and a couple gb of ram, Vista runs very well. Remember, folks whined that XP was a "slow, memory hog" compared to Win 98SE...and so it goes. -- ...something is happening here but you don't know what it is...do you, Mr. Jones? | | Psicop More human than human Premium join:2005-12-21
| reply to Psicop Hi guys,
I am not into gaming but I would like to know what does a Gateway notebook have that a ASUS doesn't?
I can buy an ASUS notebook with Vista a 2.4 GHz processor, 4 GB RAM and a 250GB HDD cheaper than what Gateway are offering like in the link I first provided. That model the X55SV-AS081C I read is very good.
Any ideas??
Thanks again. | | PeteC2 Ballad Of A Thin Man Premium,MVM join:2002-01-20 Bristol, CT clubs:

Re-read my post, as I said If you are into gaming... So, if not, then there is no loss at all with having the integrated gpu (X3100), and in fact, as it is better on power consumption and creates less heat, may actually be an advantage based on your usage. I have integrated graphics on my notebook, and have no use/need of anything otherwise...as I am not a gamer. Now, I have no issue with ASUS, and they make decent enough notebooks, I do think that some other brands offer more for the dollar, but that does not make ASUS necessarily a "bad" buy...just not the most cost-effective. Certainly I can find the same or better feature set for well less than that, but again, there are the intangibles...some folks simply like one brand better than another, no crime in that! -- ...something is happening here but you don't know what it is...do you, Mr. Jones? | | Psicop More human than human Premium join:2005-12-21 | reply to Psicop I will shoot for the Gateway option, problem is that I live in Australia and if I buy it online what is going to happen if I encounter warranty related issues and support. | | Psicop More human than human Premium join:2005-12-21 | reply to Psicop I found this:

| It is...but, may I ask a question?
You had just mentioned that you are not into gaming...then why would you even bother buying a notebook that has a good portion of it's value in a gamer's GPU? If you are not a gamer, the Nvidia 8800M will gain you nothing, run hotter and take more of a toll on battery run-time.
Also, this is a 17" screen, versus the 15.4" models you were previously looking at.
Psicop, I don't mean to sound "preachy", but the point is, what are you buying this notebook for...what kind of usage? Is it going to be a desktop replacement/gaming laptop, is it going to be a "general purpose" machine, will it be a "road warrior" that you carry/travel with? This Gateway is a completely different purpose laptop than those you previously mentioned.
There are a lot of nice laptops out there in many different configurations...even before considering price, the first thing to making a happy purchase, is determining exactly what form-factor (screen size, weight, durability etc.) suits your needs, and then which features are important to you.
For example, I am not a huge movie buff, and a blu-ray drive is just a yawn to me...but I have friends who are movie buffs, and wouldn't buy a lappy without one! I am also not into gaming, and anything beyond integrated graphics for me, is just a waste...but my nephew who is a gamer, wouldn't get caught dead with integrated graphics...and I don't blame him!
What I would not do, is spend money on features that did not fill a purpose for my computing needs... -- ...something is happening here but you don't know what it is...do you, Mr. Jones? | | Psicop More human than human Premium join:2005-12-21
| Hi Pete,
Thanks a lot for caring
OK, I need a notebook for mainly running Photoshop and keeping all my image files which grow really fast.
I watch the occasional movies in my laptop when I download P2P for movies never released in Australia and impossible to find here.
What do you think about these two?

| IThe G1S would to me, appear to be a lesser choice due to the slowish (4200rpm) hard drive...at the cost of that system, that drive is slow...and not that spacious. For downloading movies and working with video images/photos, I would want a larger and faster hard drive. If it came with another choice in hard drives, that might be different.
The M70SA-C1, albeit pricey, has a very nice configuration, dual hard drives, and since you are into movies/photos etc., the 17" screen may be to your liking...as long as you don't schlepp this all over the place...a 17" screen model tends not to be a convenient "travel-companion", although for it's size, the weight isn't that bad...
Again though, ask yourself if you will really use blue-tooth, Blu-Ray, etc., after all, you are paying for these features! If you do plan to use them, then it appears to be a very nice system. -- ...something is happening here but you don't know what it is...do you, Mr. Jones? | |
