| Shaw Static IP Problem!!
Hello everyone,
I am having a problem with my Shaw internet service for my business. Basically, I have a business here in Calgary, Alberta and my ISP is Shaw. Because we have a business account, our IP address is static.
I recently recieved an extensive e-mail from Shaw regarding the fact that they are doing maintenance on their nodes and as such, our Static IP address has been changed.
They sent me all the new info including new DNS server addresses, new gateway address, new subnet mask and ofcourse the new IP address.
I went ahead and inputed all the new information into our router which connects to one computer and a Moneris DEBIT machine. However, since then, everyday, the computer fails to connect to the internet and the DEBIT machine will read "NO LINE DETECTED."
At that point, no matter what you do will bring the connection back up, whether it is resetting the router or the modem, or resetting the computers. The only thing that seems to fix it is time. If I come back the next day, it will start working, but only after unplugging the modem for 15 seconds and replugging it in. It is the only way that it will work again.
I am unsure of what is causing this anomoly. I attempted contacting Shaw, they tested the modem and said there is nothing wrong on their end. I updated the router's firmware and reset all the information, however, the problem presists.
Anyone have any insight? Any information would be very helpful.
Thank you in advance. |

@shawcable.net | It sounds like the ARP cache. Have Shaw reset the modem on their end and do whatever you need to do on your end to dump the ARP cache on your equipment. |

| reply to Sneezy sorry for the delays in my replies!
However, I contacted Shaw, turns out the information they had sent me was COMPLETELY incorrect...
The modem had been setup to use a different IP address than the information that was given to us. So I asked the technician, how come it still worked if my router was set to one static IP yet the router was set to something else...and he actually had no answer for me.
The good news is that internet no longer just cuts out whenever it feels like it, the bad news is that now, every morning, I end up having to reset the modem before the internet comes on... I still do not know why this is happening and neither does Shaw.
The only thing I can think of is the fact that the light switches in the store do not just turn off the lights, they also shut off the power to the circuit where the router is connected (the modem is on another circuit which is always on)...so I am wondering whether that has something to do with it. But even if so, why it wasnt affecting anything prior to the Shaw address change etc. still has me stumped!
Because regardless, when the router is turned on again in the morning, it should try to get the same static IP address again that the modem has retained the entire time...
Any other ideas would be appreciated =) |

| see that's the problem...cuz there is no way to do that.
The plug that the router, the computer and the DEBIT machine are plugged into turns off at night, and the modem is in a completely different room and is directly connected to the power switch board. And we can't move the router because otherwise we're gonna have to run 3 at least 30 foot wires across the store or through the walls to connect the router to all of our devices.
Secondly, why would these problems arise all of a sudden just by simply changing our static IP address information? They were not happening prior to that when everything else was in the same situation. The router used to be turned off at night back then as well. But now that our info has changed, it doesnt work. =( |

| reply to Sneezy HAHA no it isn't a Mr. Sub store.
It is a Watch IT! jewellery and watch store. It is a really wornky setup tho! And it's sad that I am the only person in the company which employs about a 100 people that has any idea of how to do this stuff. So it all gets piled on me...for god sakes, no one even knew how to get into the router because they had forgotten the password and they didn't know how to reset it.
Luckily, we are doing renovations in October and we're gonna ensure that the router is adjacent to the modem, instead of it hidden in the ceiling like it is now!!! |
