| So, I just bought Counter Strike Today
One hour ago, I just bought the $9.99 counter strike from steam. Is there any tips or tricks that you guys could tell me? I read through the faqs and the downloadable map pack has been removed from the server.
Lmao, Steam gave me a gift of Team Fortress for 2 days. |

| Tip #1: Be prepared to get pwned.. a lot.
Tip #2: Headshots are king.
Tip #3: Make macros for buying your gear, it saves time when the round starts.
Tip #4: Start private servers full of bots for a few rounds per map to get to know each map.
I always sucked at CSS, probably because I only played a few times and was always killed so quick it wasnt fun. But seriously, practice headshots, body armor makes it hard to get a quick kill aiming at the torso.
My biggest tip would be play Team Fortress 2 while you have it for free and see if you'd rather play that. I like TF2 much more than CSS, because even when I was a n00b to the game and died a lot, the stylized art and humor made even dying amusing for a while till I got the hang of things.
Also keep in mind that I wasnt very good with online fps using kb+m untill I played TF2 a lot, so ymmv. |

My only tip is to format your hard drive to rid it of the filth that is CS. And if you've got TF2 on there, all the more reason. Quickly, before it spreads like a cancerous lesion to all the other games on your hard drive.
Then do yourself a favor and get a real team fortress game like TFC or Quake 2 TF.
Don't waste your time with CS. Too many hacks. Repetetive gameplay. Lame headshots.
The upside to CS is that you'll have time to invent cold fusion or plasma reactors in the time you have to wait between rounds. |

| reply to Siko CS came out in retail form in 2000 or 2001. it's engine was the Half-Life engine (CS was a free mod for HL before steam) which debuted in 1999, but has roots as far back as Quake 1 and 2.
the GFX of CS 1.6 are not really any better than Half-Life's of 1999. |

| reply to brianiscool said by brianiscool :haha wow sad and CS 1.6 came out in 1992 rotfl. 1992? There was barely anything on the Internet, back then. Let alone 3D shooter games on the Internet. Where do you get your information?
Gooseman, who first came up with the Counter-Strike, barely picked up Quake in 1996. Quake is a first-person shooter computer game that was released by id Software on June 22, 1996. After which, he was working on Action Quake 2 mod, the inspiration for Counter-Strike.
Counter-Strike was developed on the GoldSrc engine, a heavily modified Quake Engine. Which Half-Life used and Valve eventually developed into the now familiar Source Engine, used in Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike Source. -- Games - GameTech - S.F.Bay - 新 |

Don't waste your time with CS. Too many hacks. Repetetive gameplay. Lame headshots. The upside to CS is that you'll have time to invent cold fusion or plasma reactors in the time you have to wait between rounds. Don't mind the hater. Its not that bad in actuality. Yes there are hackers, but you're going to find that with all games, and they are easilly avoidable if you pick a server with active admins.
The real issue is the game has been out for 7-8 years and you've got some really really good people playing, so the ones that suck like to immediatly scream hacker, so the problem is alot more about perception than actually hacking.
Repetetive gameplay? How is it any more or less repetitive than TFC or TF2? You got regular cs, gungame, aim maps, fun maps, jump maps, surfing maps, pokemon mods, warcraft mods. The game wouldn't still be this popular without the awesome replayability of it. You'll never be a pro, there's always room for improvement, so if the gameplay suits you its hard to not come back to it.
Really the fact that the game is so old and still has so many people playing can more than make my point for me. It was popular and remains popular for good reason. It involves alot more strategy and stealth than a run n' gun capture the flag type of game, so some patience is required. If you have ADHD then this game probably isn't for you. Depending on how fast you die you might end up with plenty of time inbetween rounds, which actually works in my favor because I smoke weed inbetween rounds, but if thats not your style they do have deathmatch servers.
As far as getting into the game initially..
Learn with the MP5 first. Also don't be scared to die. Its going to happen anyway. I was always a big fan of rushing in head first. Many times its a quick death, but when you take out several opponents it can really get your blood pumping.
Also aim maps are your friend. In the map filter in steam just put a "A" in and check out some maps specifically for practice. Find an aim map with deathmatch and you've got it made. No waiting between rounds to keep on practicing. You might even still be able to find a headshot only server, which turns off all the hitboxes except the head. Great practice!
In conclusion, Ratman probably tried CS and couldn't take the learning curve required to not suck, so don't listen to him.
Edit: I started with 1.2...I'm not cool enough to claim I played during beta...I was actually playing TFC at the time, I hated CS back then too, but it was only based on watching someone else play it. Once I got into it, it was over, I still play 1.6 occasionally, didn't like the feel of CS:S. |

| reply to Siko Heh. Be sure to run around firing the Elites(?) (Dual pistols) pointed in the air at the end of a round for the victory celebration.
For Team Fortress I usually went for demo class. Detpack FTW! Be sure to get out of the line of sight after planting it. -- Team Helix | SETI |
