Why does everyone hate their ISP

I know that most people on here are "power users"; however, why does everyone harp on their ISP?

Yes, there probably are some problems but that doesn't mean that they are not being worked on...I had speed issues in my area but 2 weeks ago everything was resolved - I guess Shaw does look at problems contrary to popular belief...

Shaw does do better at customer support then most businesses, I love Shaw... i used to work for Shaw, i hate some of the people i worked with (they still work their). Because i wokred thier i can say that Shaw has a lot to work on when it comes to keeping their employees happy and better retention.

but from a none personal point of view everyone complains, but the people that complain too much are the ones that have no clue, think they are the most important people in the world and think they are owed something.

that will never change, there will always be people like that out there... thankfully its only like 2% of the customers.

Generally just people who want to bitch about something post (ie no one ever calls the help desks and says ' wow everything is great'). I'm one of Shaw's very first clients in Calgary and I've been happy ever since. Shaw has never given me a reason to look elsewhere for my internet connectivity and their service is above and beyond expectation so really I love my ISP.

Now I don't run P2P software and my servers are commercially hosted elsewhere as they should be. My Home Server (cool little system from Microsoft) works great when I'm away from home, my upload/download speeds are good (xtreme is plenty quick, but someday I might try the nitro just for fun) and with the SOHO package I get 5 IP addresses (I use those IPs for testing firewalls etc, I don't use the email addresses or webspace as they are not big enough for what I need) so really I have nothing to complain about with Shaw so its no wonder my TV, phone and internet services are all with Shaw.

To be honest I hate shaw.

Ok so their installation and customer service is great when you phone them up with a problems a lot better than Telus. The issue I have with Shaw is they frequently phone me telling me I am over my bandwidth limit and make "suggestions" to cut back my use. The thing is I am well below my limit by about 10 - 20 gigs. They throttle their internet (At peak times I get twice as good speeds with Telus than Shaw), I keep getting reset pages on web pages, and if you look at places in the US you get a lot more bang for your buck in terms of speed.

Will if more user new more about the tech and the shit they pull off more people would be bitching. This bit with BELL you see now is just a start hopefully to the customers seeing the shit ISPS pull off. Canadians would be even more pissed off if they new how much they were be taken for a ride, especially when compared to other countrys.

What people don't understand is that if people were just left to download everything they want, nobody would be surfing, everyone would get 512kbps speeds - why is that better?

Heres a DSL service from nidram.uk for £14.50 per month:

Up to 8Mb Download†, up to 448Kb Upload
25GB Transfer Allowance Policy unlimited off peak ('Transfer Allowance Policy' for Peak Time transfer allowance - this applies to data transferred between the hours of 8am and Midnight, seven days a week. Once the allowance is hit, users will still be able to connect - but limited to 64Kbps transfer rate. Any data transferred between Midnight and 8am does not count towards the Data Transfer Allowance.)

So how bad are Canadian ISP's...really - would you want a transfer policy like that?

Compare Canadas with any nordic nation or even south korea. We are talking 100mbit and in spots testing of 1gigabit lines to the home. Even the americans have it better then us with their 50/25/20/15 fios. UK/AU from what ive last seen are also in poor shape..

why is it when people talk about speeds in other countrys, they never stop to think about population density, of those places and the cost.

canada population is more spread out.

and almost all of canada has broadband connection. while you go to the places in the otherside of the world, only the main citys have those speeds while you go out side of that city by like a few KMs and all they have is dial-up.

i think we are doing great for speeds and isps, for the topology we have here

@chevrontexaco.com

it you look at the statistics then yes but if you look at it on a map geographically we are not dispersed as the statistics would have you belive..

Majority of Canada's population lives in metropolitan enclaves, even though our density is small i think we have a perfect opportunity for Fios deployment.

We are not like the US where there are many many dispersed population centres.

GTA, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, GTA, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City, St Johns, Halifax (to mention major centres of population)

I'd pay that much for that connection as fast as I can get my money out. I'd pay twice that much for that connection, assuming I was able to use all of that bandwidth all the time.

Most of Canada lives in a large city with mid to high population density.

That's not a valid counter argument. The problem is a lack of direct compatition between providers. If Telus/Shaw/Bell where getting their market share chopped off from under them by a provider offering much better service they would either inovate or go retreat to their old products (TV/PHONE) which would stab them in the back once we move compleatly onto net communication services.

Of course you'd be willing to pay for that connection, but how many people in a certain place would? If 1-3% of my customers needed a connection like that it would be lower on my "to do" list, that being said Bandwidth should be increased as more and more is needed with everything being available online. Does anyone remember the days of 14.4kbps and paying for the time you were actually logged in I think there are allot of spoiled Ineternet users out there and the grass is always greener on the other side. But I have heard some grumblings about docsis 3 being available for people using shaw soon, at that point who's going to compete with them?
