| reply to Phil Re: Struggling with GIC (Gaming Identity Crisis)
said by Phil :Well I find your topic interesting as I am in the same boat as you. Lately the only game I've been playing is TF2 which I can play anywhere from 30 minutes to 1-2 hours. When I do play for longer than an hour it is usually because I'm playing on a fun, relaxing server with other mature players. Maybe get involved with other players your age (it's not so much age as it is maturity level)? That may very well it. A level of maturity and relaxation is always fun for me. Overall though, its the games themselves. TF2 is fun for me for about 30 minutes. Same with most games. After that though, it just loses its luster. I have tried other games like GTAIV, and that can hold me for about 45 minutes or so, then I am ready for something else. I miss the days where I could start a game up and play for hours on end. WoW was big on that, but I also did that with games like F.E.A.R., Half Life, and Bioshock.
I am hoping this is just a phase I am in right now. |

I was a long time player of planetside for years. I wish another MMO FPS came out that was like Battlefield 2. Ah well, but I digress. |

| reply to Nightfall Well here's a funny thing for me: I was one of those dumb-a$$es that played WAY too much and lost jobs, money, etc. to it. So it got to the point where I was FORCED to quit for a while, and to be honest ... it was what I needed.
I got a much-needed "vacation" from something I only slightly realized was burning me out.
Then I ummm ... deleted, yeah, that's what I did ... two of my 70s ... and 2 of my friends suddenly had a 70 warrior and 70 mage... *ahem*.
After all that and a month's or so of "vacation" I played for a while after that only occasionally (once a week or thereabouts).
Then I volunteered to be activated for the Navy and figured I wouldn't have the time or desire to play again so I let my account activation expire. During our training phase there was more downtime then I thought for, so I bought a laptop and started up again.
I didn't realize how badly I missed it all, so now I'm in Kuwait and addicted again. So, start doing all those things you never thought much on during your addiction, forget about WoW, and if you get back in you get back in... If not, then your "new life" is for you! |

| reply to Nightfall Yea, your overdosing on the videa games... same thing happens to me. Kind of... I got this thing for UT2k4, and can play that shit religiously for hours on end, even today. Aside from that, too much Assassins Creed, GTA 4, Halo 3 combo can drive you away from games. Take a break, and you'll want to start playing again. OR find other games you usually don't play, like RPG's and puzzle games. They'll wet your appetite again. I suggest firing up a Final Fantasy game here and there to keep your game logic on the upside; great games to unwind with since theres lots of reading/listening and non-interactive parts. |

| reply to Nightfall I also have the same thing. I got bored of WoW soon after AQ came out. Got back when BC came out but found out nothing really changed except the new talents (which was again, more of the same). I soon quit WoW once again after about 2 months of playing BC. BF2, TF2 and WC3 are fun when lanning with people but I don't really play them alone.
I think what happened is gamers like us who've seen everything look for something very unique every time a game comes out. Don't forget playing a game is entertainment as well. Like movies, you can only watch and interact with that until you lose interest. |

I keep buying them thinking I'm going to like it, play it once, then never again. I think Starcraft 2 might get me playing again though. |

| reply to Nightfall I've been through the same crisis Nightfall. Over a year ago I got rid of my WoW account, a 70 Human Lock, 60 Dwarf Hunter, and a 70 Cow Hunter. Got rid of it as in won't be getting it back... so I was pretty devoted at quiting the game.
I moved on to playing NavyField for about a year then got burnt on that game as well. I jumped around playing CSS, DOD:S, Raven Shield, BF2, Arma, and CoD4. Of all those games I would play in small spurts of an hour or so then get bored.
To me, it seems nothing really new and inspiring has came out. They are rehashed games that we have already played with a different skin. CoD4 single player was fun, I actually played through that but it only last a whopping 6+ hours
My buddies recently got me back into WoW. So here I am with a fresh new account playing a character I haven't played before, a UD Rogue. So far I'm at 48 and stopped to PVP in the 40-49 bracket and I'm having a blast. So for now, WoW has sparked interest again.
Not to sure if I'm looking forward to Warhammer... don't think I would want to do the level grind again, plus it doesn't have a stealth class which I find I really enjoy now. |

| reply to Nightfall Sounds like you focus on MMO and RPG a lot. Could it be that you may enjoy a solid RTS as a change of pace? I thoroughly loved Rome:Total War, although it is older. There's always Medieval TW:2, World In Conflict, or Company of Heroes. Dawn of War if you like fantasy-based. I find that I genuinely enjoy RTS a lot more as I get older. FPS is fun, but its short-lived for me. Never did MMO, and have yet to truly immerse myself in RPG.
Another thing is, I don't have enough to time to game as much as I want, so that actually keeps me hungry. |

My WoW account is in limbo right now. I did have thoughts on selling it, but I am going to keep it and call it good. I left the game back in November of 2005 and came back in April of 2006. Will I do the same thing again after leaving over 2 months ago? Maybe. Right now I am enjoying the fact that I don't have to do any of the end game crap right now. I devoted a lot of time and energy to raiding at first, and while it was fun, spending 5 hours a night 3-4 nights a week was just too much. Part time raiders don't get any gear at all, so I ditched that after a while. PVP was a little nicer, but I just did it for fun and with the new PR requirements for arena gear, I wouldn't get that much.
I hit the same thing back in the day where I got tired of the grind and started my account back up with a new faction. I might do the same thing again down the road. |

MMO I used to with WoW, so maybe you could consider WoW to be an RPG as well. As for a solid RTS, I really enjoyed Dawn of War and Company of Heroes. Maybe it is time to reinstall DoW again. The only bummer is that I can't compete with other players online very well. They just know the game inside out and backwards and I don't have the thirst to compete online anymore. |

2 edits | reply to Nightfall If you want a truly memorable PC game experience I would suggest STALKER (provided you dont hit any bugs) and Mass Effect. Company of Heroes is probably the best RTS out there, in all honesty I never got really into it simply because the WWII setting has worn me down at this point, but the gameplay is just awesome and truly innovative for the RTS genre, had it been a modern combat or sci-fi setting CoH would probably be among my top 5 favorite games of all time. If you enjoy dark humour and can dont mind the fact that it looks like a kids game at first glance I would give Psychonauts a try as it is brilliantly written and executed and quite hilarious. -- 2.66 Core2 Quad | Asus P5W-DH Deluxe | Creative X-Fi Xtreme Gamer | BFGTech GeForce 8800Ultra 768 | 2GB Corsair 800Mhz DDR2 | ThermalTake Tough Power 850W | ThermalTake V1 'Butterfly' Heatpipe | ThermalTake Tsunami chassis | 150GB WD Raptor X | |

I have some friends that I play RTS games with. We co-op against the computer over the internet (talking via Ventrilo), this allows for differences in player skill levels (people will ask for help when they need it) and we can adjust the computer difficulty to where everyone can be challenged. (We do this at most a couple of times a week for a couple of hours at a time.)

| reply to Nightfall I want to say thanks to everyone who offered their advice and help. I have went the route of reinstalling my Dawn of War game as well as Max Payne. I am going to be purchasing Stalker soon as I have heard good things about that. Bioshock was the best game I have played recently, and continuing in those lines may be a good option. I want a game with a strong storyline and good gameplay.
My time with MMOs overall is down. I am still playing Eve Online, but only sparingly. WoW is out for me at the moment, but I might pick it back up in a few months. I am eager to try out Warhammer.
As for games that are coming out, I am very eager to try out the new Golden Axe for the PS3. I have my sights set on MGS4 as well. -- My domain - Nightfall.net |

| reply to Nightfall Time to revisit games 10 years and older. If you don't have the systems you have VC on Wii.
If you cannot appreciate beating those games again then this is destiny telling you that your time is going to be needed for some other things very soon. |
