New HDTV channels in Socal this fall

I just bought a HDTV last week, and called up Time Warner Socal to ask about their HDTV lineup. They told me that they are currently working to upgrade the network in the entire Socal Area (which is true, I received a letter about a month ago that they were going to work in the neighbourhood), and that a total of 20 new HD channels should be added by Fall 2008, and we should be getting a total of about 70 HD channels in 2009. (so that would be 30 or so more on top of the 20)

Sure, they are way behind DirectTV on that one, but I was just wondering if anyone in Socal has any more info, and happens to know which channels will be added?

TWC has updated their Programming Alerts page on their So Cal website today with some surprising info

quote:
Beginning July 9, 2008 through February 2009, the following launches will take place throughout Time Warner Cable Los Angeles' service areas. Launch schedule and channel numbers will be available on our website at www.timewarnercable.com/socal starting early July 2008. Some of the launches listed below may only apply to limited areas.

HGTV HD, Food Network HD, CNN HD, History Channel HD, A&E HD, Golf/Versus HD, Discovery HD, TLC HD, Disney Channel HD, ABC Family HD, ESPNews HD, and National Geographic HD will be launched in all areas. These networks will be on the same service level as the standard definition version of each network. HD equipment is required to receive High Definition channels.

What is not mentioned is Time Warner's shame:

C1R, ZeeTV, CCTV-4, ART, TV Asia, RAI, TVK1, and ETTV will be launched in areas where these networks are currently not available. These networks will be available as a premium service except TVK1, which will be available on Choice Tier.

El Paquetazo package and El Paquetazo Dos tier will be launched in areas where currently not available. El Paquetazo package will be available for $34.95 per month, plus equipment and included in this package are Broadcast Basic services, Espanol tier services, El Paquetazo Dos Tier services, and selected English networks. El Paquetazo Dos tier is also available ala carte for $5 per month with subscription to Nuestra Tele Paquete.

The following services will be launched on El Paquetazo Dos tier: AYM Sports 857, Caracol International 821, Cine Mexicano 836 (not available in some areas), Ecuavisa Internacional 819, Latele Novela 845 (not available in some areas), Latinoamerica TV 818, Sur Mexico 809, TV Colombia 822 (not available in some areas), and TV Chile 820 (not available in some areas).

The following services will be launched on Espanol Tier: Bandamax 840, De Pelicula 832, and De Pelicula Clasico 833, Discovery Familia 852.

The following services will become available on an additional channel numbers: KVEA 803, KAZA 804, Galavision 805, Mexico 22 806, CBTV Michoacan 807, Once Mexico 808, TVE Internacional 811 (not available in some areas), Sur 816 (not available in some areas), CNN En Espanol 828, The History Channel En Espanol 829 (not available in some areas), Discovery En Espanol 830, Cine Latino 834, Infinito 835, HTV 838, Video Rola 839, SiTV 842, Mun2 843 (not available in some areas), Utilisima 844, Cartoon Network (SAP) 847 (not available in Artesia and Claremont), Boomerang (SAP) 848, Toon Disney en SAP 849, Sorpresa 850, V-me 851, La Familia Cosmovision 853, EWTN Espanol 854, GolTV 856 (not available in some areas), Fox Sports En Espanol 859, and ESPN Deportes 860. These services will continue to be available on their existing channel number and service level.

Evidently, bandwidth is No Problemo for TW except when it comes to English-language programming. I advocate that customers unhappy with the HD selection bear this in mind.

Most of those Spanish channels they've carried for years, they're just grouped into a couple of tiers now and marketed more. About 13 of them are new and would basically be carried in one or two 6 Mhz QAM channels.

Makes sense if a HUGE part of their service area passed but unsubscribed are Spanish speaking.

In July, they're also launching a dozen English HD channels. That takes about six 6 Mhz QAM channels. Another dozen later in the year and another couple dozen next year.

So altogether TWC seems to plan on using about 24x more bandwidth for primarily English HD channels then the amount of bandwidth they using for the Spanish channels they're launching.

So what problem did you have concerning TWCs bandwidth allocation for English language programming again?

Blame that on FSN. They only have content on there occasionally. It's the same for any provider carrying that channel.

Here's their schedule for HD programming:

Mac, What amazes me is that TWC or ANY of the local operators that I have found, are not carrying any of the Spanish language local HDTV signals. KMEX and KVEA at least have some very aggressive HDTV offerings and promotion. Can it be a retrans consent issue at this point in time? I would think that Univision and NBC Universal would feel the carriage was worth more at this time than trying to nickle and dime the cable companies. At least we don't have to deal with Sinclair around here!

Honestly I don't think there is enough demand for it right now. TWC just started PUSHING a couple of tiers of Spanish programming to try and capture a large segment of the untapped subscribers around SoCal... maybe if that is successful Spanish HD won't be far behind.

That's not FSN-West HD, they never carried FSN-West HD. The channel is called "TWC Sport Specials" or something along those lines. They happen to broadcast the HD broadcasts of FSN-West when a local team is playing, e.g. Angels or Dodgers, and the pre-game and after-game shows. But they do not broadcast any of the other FSN-HD content.

TWC does not have FSN-HD in their line up as far as I know.

Just to make sure it's clear, only some areas (TWC Legacy & a few others) are getting the channels on 7/09/08, the rest of the areas (The rest of old Adelphia/Comcast)will be following through Feb.

Cool. I live in Orange, always has been TWC so I should be good to go next week To bad it won't be this weekend, I'll be home for most of it.

I guess the Adelphia and Comcast networks needed more work?

OH, Can a mod change the topic title to "New HDTV channels in Socal starting this July!"

Since it isn't really happening in fall, although maybe for some

@rr.com
What about new areas that have only been TWC? I live in a neighborhood only 8 years old in Corona. I believe it's always been TWC.
