 Using your own Modem

I have sufboard 5100.

Can I use that instead of paying this stupid lease fee for the
webstar dpx100 modem.

Is there any restrictions?

 Re: Using your own Modem

People here report they don't get the advertised speeds with their own modem.

I use the 3 IP perk of WOW. I wonder if that is possible with a BYOD modem?

It must be a DOCSIS 2.0 modem, with a DOCSIS 2.0 firmware to get the advertised speeds. Anything else is a crap shoot. WOW won't update the firmware on any customer owned modem, so if you don't know, don't waste your time.

And yes, you still get the 3 IPs with your own modem, it's built into the config file.

Can I update this 5100 surfboard with DOCSIS 2.0 firmware so it gets the full 6.0 speed and where does one get this DOCSIS 2.0 firmware?

No, you can't. Well, I guess you could try and call Motorola and see if they will. Motorola does not allow for end user firmware updates.

What you could do, is get a buddy that has Comcast and get him to provision it on his account. It will get the latest firmware that Comcast is sending out, then remove it from his account and put it on yours.

I can't say for sure that even a DOCSIS 2.0 modem will get full speeds today. WOW has been working on getting it going and have been playing on their end and with their vendors. If I had a 2.0 modem I could put it on my account and do some testing with them. But I don't have one to test and really don't have the time right now to do it.

All I know is with my current modem sb5100 I would have to downgrade to 4.0 speed and call WOW! to use it.

I saw a webstar on ebay for $40.00 can I use that?

Re: Using your own Modem

I had a SB 5101 and I was able to use it for a long time with no problems, including going back to when it was Sigecom where I live in Evansville. Suddenly a few months ago it went from working fine, to randomly the config file would go from the top tier to some lower tier(still being billed for the top tier). No explanation could ever be given for why I would randomly get the loser config file pushed to my modem other than that they couldn't promise the best speeds with my own modem only with theirs. This makes no sense to me because when my modem had the correct config file, I was able to get the full 6mbps down. The only time I had problems is when they randomly pushed the wrong config out to me and then I could call them, complain, and they would push the right config. Bam right back to having full speeds until the wrong config was pushed out to my modem again.

How you convined WOW! to give that 6.0 speed config?

I think I'll give it a try if I find the right rep.

Well I had to complain for awhile to them that hey, 3 days ago it was working fine and now it's on a different config. Eventually they would give in and re-push it to me. I should also note I suppose, eventually it started to happen more often(I don't know why it happened at all but it sure seemed odd that suddenly it happened alot) but it became hassle enough that I gave in and took one of their modems, with a credit each month for 2 years to take care of the fee for the modem.

Interesting responses so far. I used a Motorola SB5100 for 2 years with Sigecom in Evansville until WOW bought them out. I upgraded to 6.0mbps download speed when WOW took over and it worked fine for a few months. I'm guessing they did something to their configuration for people here last winter because I started to get dropped from the internet a lot and sometimes it wouldn't work at all. After a few days of this, I called WOW customer support and they wouldn't even talk to me about technical support unless I was using one of their modems. I had to go to their local office and rent one for $2.50/month. They told me that they don't offer technical support if you're not using one of their modems.

Great business model--forces you into their little ongoing revenue generating scheme of $2.50/month tech support fee.

Be grateful they only charge $2.50/month- Cox HSI charges $10/month to rent a cable modem!

Well, still I don't like paying this dumb fee when I have a perfectly working broadband modem.

Wow! put these limitations that will not support you, and that you won't get 6mb speed. I give them a ring and see if I can convice someone like elzar did.

And they are well within their rights to do so. They paid for the network and they operate it. They aren't the only option in town and know it. So it's really their choice to support customer owned modems. There's a lot involved in maintaining them, and they really don't want the hassle, especially when involving firmware updates. I can't say that I blame them.

maybe they are within their right. I just don't like how they did it. Here my modem is working fine, then my connection is slow. I look at the config file, and I'm on the lowest plan. Nice how their system forced my modem to the config for the lowest plan, yet at the same time it did not change my billing to the lowest plan. I was still paying for 6mbps, and even though my modem had handled that speed fine, they actually set my caps way below the plan i was paying for so there was no possibility i could get any of the bandwith I was rightfully paying for.

I got the update in a way you stated. However, it would never go above 4 on wow's system. Calling and bitching got me no where, so, I went to CC. But doesn't matter now because they gave me a modem free of charge because I got the phone service too.

Comcast doesn't give out phone modems for free. They are $3 a month, just like the normal modems, it's just a a forced rental.

But the problem with sub owned modems has only been recently fixed. Back when you had the problem it wasn't the case.

Ugh.. no. The 3.00 fee is removed (credited) on my bill. So, not sure about the math in your section of the universe but on my planet that adds up to free . Maybe it's the package. Remember now, they were going around "stealing" WOW customers back in March and for 82 bucks a month with HD (72 without), dvr, digital w/HBO, phone and now 6/1HSI ( think I got 8 now but it's hard to gauge with boost) for the 1st year, 99 the 2nd year. Was told up front that with my package, I get the modem free because I asked before I took the phone service. Best thing the orig poster could do is just call and not get conflicting info on DSLR. They offered my package for about a month. Doesn't mean they don't have another promo.
