| I wonder what Shaw will do when Canadian DMCA becomes LAW
Hey I am sure everyone here knows about the criminalization of downloading copyrighted materials in the near future (unless we all camp out and rally everyday until the second reading the parliament).
I read from the newspaper that this LAW apparently scrutinizes the hardcore download/uploaders and that the govn't and ISPs act as middlemen between the source and us.
How will Shaw cable track our downloads?
What do you guys think about the fines? Is it enough to scare people off?
How is Shaw going to monitor people and properly enforce this law?
Another question, do you guys think that Shaw is gonna track us through our IP address and internet traffic?
Man, if I am scrutinized and fined for downloading I am probably going to discontinue internet services all together and use it in the library.
SHAW IS GOING TO LOSE A LOT OF CUSTOMERS

Actually, the best thing to do would be to first read the bill so you know what you're talking about 
ISPs are totally immune from any sort of copyright liability. That means they don't have to police their networks for copyrighted content: it's up to the rights holder to notify the ISP, which in-turn must notify the customer (notice-and-notice) to maintain their immunity.
The US system, notice-and-takedown, is much worse: the ISP must remove material alleged to be infringing immediately upon receiving a DMCA copyright notice. This has led to censorship and abuse of copyright: www.chillingeffects.org
Shaw won't do sweet fuck all because it would cost them time and money. Not to mention that they have no idea who owns copyrights to what. |

Shaw never has listened to cease and desist letters for P2P violations, I highly doubt that will ever change.
Shaw is like the P2P safe harbour from Anti-P2P organizations, but then again they are throttling in select area(s) and/or times. |

one alternative is to use usenet with SSL encryption. no one's going to know what you're downloading. its damn fast and caters to leechers.
fine print: unless isp provides good service (telus and shaw don't) it costs $10-15/month plus. however, pretty much the only service guaranteed to max out your connection. |

Yes, SSH/other encryptions with usenet are awesome, but like you said emmpeethree, you'd need a 'third party', less popular ISP... Here in the Okanagan we have Ispeed. |

As long as you're not going over ISP limits, would your isp care if it was encrypted? They get a court order to divulge that info, and that have proof that you're moving alot of encrypted files, which really doesn't prove anything? |

| My apologies, I was speaking in regards to the fact that some customers use the encryption to bypass ISP throttling of Usenet services, and then think they are getting away with something, where in fact it would not be difficult at all for them to then throttle port 563 or 443 traffic because of the traffic usage.
