Mediacomm internet in Coralville (up around North Park at least) is out
When I talked to them last night, they said it was due to the power being cut for the Coralville strip flooding | | moe300

| I wouldn't expect the problems in Coralville to be fixed anytime soon. I was told today that the fiber box which is near Hwy 6 and First ave in Coralville is causing most of the problems in Coralville. Mediacom got permission from the City of Coralville, and Police to take a boat to the box and the Mediacom engineers had a plan to re-route the box to a dry area toward delimart, and it could have been done in a day. Once they got out there to work on it, the wonderful Coralville fire dept told them they can't be out there, even though they had permission from the city, and police. The fire dept said they could only be out there in a fire dept boat, with a fireman present, so the higher-up from Mediacom which was present, said "ok, thats fine, we just need your boat and fireman for a day and this problem can be fixed". The fire dept promptly told them no way, they can't have the boat for a day, so the problem isn't going to get fixed until the water is gone! Everyone in Coralville should call and raise holy hell, cause it's ridiculous that these branches of city govt try to make everything difficult. A problem which could have been fixed by now continues, and probably will continue for weeks. Mediacom is losing customers over this, cause businesses that use the phone for cc processing are losing out, and switching to Qwest. Mediacom should sue the city of Coralville for damages over this crap since it's their stupid fire dept who stopped them. | | marigolds Gainfully employed, finally Premium,MVM join:2002-05-13 Saint Louis, MO

That's pretty standard operating procedures for floods. Only boats from first responders allowed on the water in certain areas. I doubt city government has any say in the matter. They would have to go through SEMA instead. -- ISCABBS - the oldest and largest BBS on the Internet telnet://bbs.iscabbs.com Professional Geographer Geographic Information Science researcher | | moe300

| I would think the City, and the Police would have told them that when they talked to them and got permission. It's actually ridiculous, and I think some of these municipalities try to make things difficult, so they seem important and can exercise their power and flex their muscles. I mean, hell, the boat was already out there and they could have had the thing fixed. Now everyone gets screwed and continues to have no internet or phone. They should tell the city of Coralville to kiss their ass, and when customers call to complain they should give the number to the city offices. All these city govt's do is drag their feet. There are roads that could be open, yet they keep road closed signs on them, and it screws the business that are on them. Prime example is Old Hwy 218/South Riverside in front of the airport. Still a road closed sign there, and there are several business that get hosed by it. I drive thru the water there anyway (which is very minimal), and the stupid pigs haven't stopped me yet. They need to get off their asses and let Mediacom and others get stuff fixed instead of hindering them. | | marigolds Gainfully employed, finally Premium,MVM join:2002-05-13 Saint Louis, MO
| Depending on the area fire departments are somewhat independent. Although the chief is hired/fired by the city, he does not report to the city beyond that. In a disaster, the fire chief is most likely part of joint command in the ICS, which basically means that fire/ems does not report to the city or the police, only State EMA. Not only flooded roads are closed, but also roads with high potential for flash flooding (which I think Old 218/S Riverside would definitely qualify as). -- ISCABBS - the oldest and largest BBS on the Internet telnet://bbs.iscabbs.com Professional Geographer Geographic Information Science researcher | | moe300

| I understand what you are saying marigolds. I feel like some of these guys should make it easier for the guys in the field, and businesses to get things fixed. Being a small business owner myself, I am absolutely frustrated with some of the things I'm seeing. I am not directly effected by the Mediacom outage in Coralville, but I feel for the people, and businesses effected by it. Just yesterday, I saw helicopter footage from CR where a cop was holding a resident at gunpoint who was going to his house. Apparently after waiting at a checkpoint for 4 hours, and being told they could go. These branches of city govt need to quit being Nazis so to speak. | |
