So overnight last night, my connection dropped for like an hour, when it came back online I was experiencing high pings on the TF2 server I rent in Seattle. It went from 13ms to over 100ms. I contacted the rental company and they were very helpful, they ran routing tests on my connection and here are the results:
Public IP address: 205.250.65.***

And their responses were:
"It looks like your ISP may be routing to us strangely here, since usually there is no call to go to NYC from Chilliwack, BC, Canada, on the way to Seattle."
"I went ahead and added XO to the mix from InterNAP Seattle (using our link between the two locations) and the ping from Telus is still high, unfortunately. I was hoping that would help.. It seems they're just choosing a poor path."
Do you think there is any way I can get Telus to reroute me? It seems they send me to NY before going to Seattle. Everyone that uses my server that also use Telus are experiencing the exact same thing. What happened? |

@telus.net | oh, btw... if you're on telus... try pinging my server, see if it's over 20ms:

There must be something in the routing protocol and metrics that is making the route take that path. Its like Telus routers thinks the server IP is in Toronto area and once the packet reaches toronto they route it to the proper location and path.
I play alot of DOD and CS from the same group of servers and am very used to the stable 12-20ms ping I get. I hopes this gets fixed soon. -- "The views expressed by me are mine alone and do not necessarily reflect the views of my employer" |

| reply to myco I'm getting routed to New York City for servers in Seattle hosted at Nuclear Fallout. This has been going on for months now, although this is the first time that I've seen NYC routers explicitly shown in the trace. Usually I just get a 70 ms spike on the way from Vancouver to Seattle, without showing any eastern routing. The worst part is that I switched to Telus from Shaw because of bad gaming performance. What a total BS answer. Telus is routing traffic to the east coast, instead of down to Seattle. Hop 4 in the traceroute of your opening post is definitely still on their network, and where a bulk of the latency can be shown.

You'd need BGP from each of the edge routers to get a full picture. As far as I can tell, Telus also has transit from Sprint in Seattle, which would also give much better routing to Internap/NFO. |

vancouver bc. i spent about 3 hours on the phone trying to convince the "help agent" that there is something wrong. "lets do another speed test"....i finally got to someone who knew how to say something besides that postit on their desk that reads "try restarting your router" and he was placing blame everywhere but telus |

| Its boils down to poor routing. They did not do this on purpose but for some reason "Bestpath Modifiers: deterministic-med" is thinking this is the best route. when it is not. Keep the pressure on. Tier 1 will refuse to forward this on any higher from my experience and will tell you everything is fine....

| reply to myco Yup, I've been enjoying my 100+ ping to Seattle servers that I normally get 5-10 to, and 130 ping to San Jose servers that I normally get 30~ish to. Kind of ridiculous when I get better ping to New York/Chicago than I do to Seattle.
This happens A LOT. Every few months, this horrid routing change will be happen and I'll be stuck with this for about a whole month, and Telus will say "everything is fine".
Oh well, Shaw will be moving into my city soon. |

You're lucky, you'll get on Shaw with a brand new node. My neighbourhood has become considerably dense (in more ways than one) and Shaw has "millions of dollars of upgrades" to catch up on according to one of their techs. I'm stuck with this crap. At least I have a VPN I can use to bypass this routing. |

| reply to myco Network peering is as complicated as the wiring on the space shuttle.
Telus would have signed a contract with all the large Isp network operators in the United States on how mutual network traffic would be handled, and by the way, Telus would be considered a small fry ISP in the U.S.
Within each large Isp's networks, say AT& T's for example, are hundreds of smaller network operators also seeking peering arrangements, ranging from free access to hundreds of thousands of dollars for access.
It's only fair that the larger Isp's are allowed to manage the traffic on their own networks from other networks like Telus's, to ensure a reliable flow of network traffic for the majority of the 'public" users.
Private peering companies like Duck Soup and Nuclear Fallout may have peering arrangements with public US ISP's or private ISP's like Cogent but not with Telus.
Your ping sky rockets when it hits the server at hop 4, wherever that one is, which hands off to the Cogent private peering network...»www.cogentco.com/us/network_map.php
...that's where the problem is because they don't have a cross border peering arrangement with any Canadian Isp in the West, just down east, most likely with Bell.
It's a routing problem alright and it resides with Cogent and whoever they have a peering agreement with, and it sure isn't Telus... |
