When is shaw rolling this out? |

@shawcable.net | when it becomes competitive to do so... When is Shaw going to up the upload speed?
So many question so few answers.. come on Shaw insiders give us a taste of whats coming up.. |

@shawcable.net | reply to FOURPOOS Shaw is too busy getting up and running with wireless phone across Canada. Watch out. Plus what fdf said-- Not competitive enough yet in the market they are in. |

@shawcable.net | reply to FOURPOOS Why does anyone care? It's not like it is going to be better for YOU. It's only better for Shaw.
Is the current Extreme package still not fast enough? With bandwidth caps any higher speed is kind of useless if you ask me. |

| I fail to see your logic. The incorporation of DOCSIS 3 is a great financial burden on the company and, while there are some benefits to the company through the switch over, it's primarily in a competitive sense. The consumer, without a doubt, is the main benefactor of the new protocol.
And sure, the current extreme package is plenty fast, and there's even Nitro for those who require more, but really, who is going to complain about being able to download even faster? Not to mention, with the current infrastructure, upstream is severely limited, and in dire need of improvement. DOCSIS 3 should allow for that.
As for the bandwidth caps, that has no effect on the speed you obtain items, only the amount of items you can obtain within a given period. An increase in speed only become problematic in this sense if you feel the need to download everything you can get your hands on. That said, I would imagine an increase in the bandwidth usage guidelines would increase with the introduction of the new standard. |

| They already give you the best and fastest service in western Canada why would they jump on DOCSIS3 right away just for the small amount of users that go upload/download crazy. If the nitro isn't fast enough for you, maybe you should think about paying for the right connection, after all you get what you pay for right. |

| reply to FOURPOOS Cogito,
The logic is that the upgrade allows them to squeeze more bandwidth out of their backbone without even more expensive upgrades to the metro network wiring. They are not just automatically going to give you more bandwidth. They may add a higher speed tier (which you will pay more for). They certainly won't want to change their caps though. |

| Well, since we're both speculating anyway, I don't really feel the need to get into an 'yes they will, no they won't' argument; but, that said, over the years, bandwidth caps have gotten higher, speeds have gotten higher, and relative prices have dropped... draw your own conclusions. |

@shawcable.net | All i want is higher upload speed. 10Mbps is fine for me but where i think we are lacking is in the upload. |

@shawcable.net
| reply to FOURPOOS Doubt you will get higher upload. Yea it's a bottleneck but mostly for them in that it limits their capacity. If they were to offer a higher upload tier I would expect they would charge a HUGE premium for that. Not speculation, simple bottom line($$$)analysis. |

Ah, if only they kept Xtreme at 2mbit up, like when they first rolled it out... |

@shawcable.net | reply to FOURPOOS Well you do get a static IP as well but yea the extra upload capacity is the main reason they charge so much more for the server package. |

| reply to FOURPOOS I noticed that on the return monitors (CH110-113 or something) there have been changes in the return path to free up space space adjacent the DOCSIS upstream channels. One of the requirements for DOCSIS 3 channel bonding is that the upstream channels are adjacent... |

  phoneboy3
@shawcable.net | reply to FOURPOOS Aren't the returns on baseband up to 6Mhz or something? Or maybe that's on the old TDM system? |
|
  JustSayin
@shawcable.net | reply to FOURPOOS The return spectrum on cable is from 5-40MHz, some technology uses 256K return channels (but 4 of them) while some (like DOCSIS) can use 1.6 or 3.2MHz return channels. |

| reply to FOURPOOS Confirmed with a senior Shaw employee. They completed docsis 3 training 2 weeks ago at the Calgary Barlow building (there was hundreds of Shaw vehicles present). Calgary-wide docsis 3.0 deployment is mid-August 2008. They are targeting offering 100mbit to each home. Edmonton area is going to offer the same packages but the Edmonton Shaw tech said they aren't making the switch to docsis 3.0 anytime soon, they will offer the sames bandwidth packages even though the modem is ~40mbit max. |

@shawcable.net | Yay! Go Calgary!! So we will be getting new modems soon? or are our current Motorola modems Docsis3 compatible?
Did he hint on the tier speeds? |

| reply to Predator314 Forgive me if I don't jump for joy just yet. I'll wait until I hear what the upload speeds are, what the caps will be, and how much all of this will cost per month.
Given what Nitro offers versus how much it costs, I am thinking it's going to be a bit of letdown, but I'd love to be proven wrong. |
