It would be nice if an email or text message could be sent out if dslr goes offline or is planning to go offline for any period of time.
Many times I have come home, fired up the computer, and found out that the site is down for either maintenance or some other reason and it would be nice to know ahead of time. If you want to stay informed, then sign! |

| I dont think outages that are known ahead of time happen often enough or for long enough periods of time for it to be a worthwhile feature, so I Oppose the idea. But I hope if your idea is approved it's something that you have to opt into, because I get enough emails already. |

| reply to 53352381 About 2:30pm EST 6/11/2008 , I tried for about 5minutes to get DSLReports.com to load and nothing worked.
Site must have been down or DDOS? Not sure I know it wasn't on my end my trace route and pings were deflected (address unknown)
Not sure if they are at it again or was this planned maintenance.
But no mods I see are on-line at present. Or at least it doesn't show them on-line. |

| reply to 53352381 This is the way I do things here in the Park I am chairman of. If management knows there is going to be work done on the power, water or gas, they have to let me and the residents know a full 72 hours ahead of the scheduled event.
If on the other hand, a water or gas line breaks we dont expect them to warn us in advance, impossible to know although some people dont understand that concept yet. What we do expect though are updates if possible.
Another words if this site were going to down for a day or two, there should be a way for them to let us know, If they get hacked thats of course like the gas line going out. -- My Bloggs, »www.insidetheie.com/ »earthlogii.blogspot.com/ »vietaffairsvets.blogspot.com/ A Forecaster for HinghamWX on EarthLogIIWX. | reply to 53352381 I'd do some more checking before concluding the site was down. For instance since the last annoying DDOS which was, what, two months ago, the site hasn't been down at all.
If you find the site unresponsive and are curious about whether it reall is so, try the following:
ping dslreports.com (does it resolve the IP?) ping dslr.net (a different IP) can you reach www.nac.net? can you ping nac.net? tracert to dslreports.com
and when you do get through if there isn't a topic about the outage it was probably just a problem out of out control - perhaps even an issue with your ISP. |

| reply to 53352381 if i'm at work and get a message about DSLR being down, it's useless to me because i'm not on the site at that time. If I come to the site and it's down, I follow similar steps as justin suggested or other troubleshooting. if it's really down, he'll have the message up letting all of us know. if it's scheduled for a length of time, i'm sure a system message can be dispatched or some sort of header on the forums.

| reply to 53352381 Like james1 stated: If it is a planned outage, it is usually short enough and rare enough not to be a problem unless you MUST be on the site every waking minute. The alternative is unplanned outages which, of course, would make this feature useless.

From experience, we already know that Justin won't leave this site down one microsecond longer than is absolutely necessary. If it's down, he's working on it. If he has to take time out of his repair work, to answer another question about why it's down, there goes another microsecond.
If my end of the net is down, I can troubleshoot on my own without needing another unknown site running some script that's blocked by NoScript.
If you need that site badly enough to trust it without knowing what it's doing, then you're a zombie in the making. If you're safe from it, then you probably don't need it.
