| New Gallery Button/Option
Ok, to start out with, I am posting this here in the Imaging Forum and asking a mod to move it to the New Feature Requests Forum. This way the people here in the Imaging forum can follow the link and know of this posts existance. After all, it effects them and they should have a say also.
This has been an issue that we have fought over since the Gallery was formed. Someone post a photo in the gallery and someone feels they have to "Critique" it. The original poster gets upset, the feud begins, it spills into the Imaging forum, people get pissed, threads get locked...etc. Personally, Im so sick of it, I threw up 4 times back.
A while back, we implemented the "Critique Invited" option in hopes that this would solve it. If you wanted a critique, you chose this option when you posted your photo. This didnt work. Now you get a critique weather you ask for one or not.
Personally, I post to share my photos. I dont want a critique. I want a new button/option. I want it to say "Critique Not Welcome". I think this is a simple enough request. I dont feel it is offensive toward anyone. It will be a personal choice. And Honestly, I think it is way over due. This problem has gone on long enough. The other option (critique invited) is clearly not working. Hopefully this will solve the problem. |

| I'm playing devil's advocate here, so please don't take this personally, but wouldn't it be just as easy to post "Critique Not Welcome" in the picture comment section before the photo is posted or in the comments section afterwards? Either way, I don't think it's going to dissuade an individual from voicing their opinion.
I don't have any statistics to back this up, but I imagine a vast majority welcome comments, good or bad, as long as they're not hateful and mean comments. I won't name names, but there are some individuals who could be more tactful and sensitive when they cut down someone's work. Their people skills are extremely lacking, to say the least.

| reply to Brainless While I agree with you about the poor attitudes of some toward the gallery images. I think that some people don't know how to interact with others and no matter what you do postings will still have negativity/rudeness as there theme. | While I agree with that in theory, I don't think it's fair to have to use voting to get comments. Many of us don't feel the voting is a good indicator of feedback, but actual comments are. The two are not necessarily tied together.
The gallery has multiple functions. If one of them is to share images just for the sake of sharing, why can't there be some kind of indicator on the posting? If it's already there for requesting critiques, why not one showing the critiques aren't needed?
*sign* although I personally think that there are many who will ignore the request for no critiques. |

I've removed my gallery and I'm not posting another image until something is done. I'm sick of self proclaimed photography experts who's egos far outstrip their actual chops, ruining the whole experience.
The way it is now, apparently one can leave whatever type of comment they like. I even have an example. I posted a comment on an image by someone who ticked me off...
...My comment was retaliatory {yet accurate} and in clear violation of anything that would fly anywhere else in any other forum on this site.
I posted the comment @ 11:35 AM est. and at 11:08 PM est, it's still there.
The setup is badly broken and invites abuse and tit for tat retaliatory voting and commentary.

| reply to Brainless Why not just define a set of guidelines (that we all should know by now anyway) in the stickies and make a small modification to the way the comment posts are displayed. The comments are a regular post with some of the info removed. You can see this by clicking on the "permalink" icon (>>). How about adding a "hey mods" link as well as the permalink icon so people can flag the offending posts (comments)? |

| reply to Brainless I guess I am one of those who is clueless. I always try to make a comment when voting or not voting. I am no pro. Far from it, but I do love looking at the images I see and have always felt that it's nice to make a nice comment...maybe even a small critique of what i feel or see, nothing personal ever meant.
I just don't get this thread. What am I missing? I've never said anything to offend anyone that I know of, would not do so even when critiquing, and I don't see the harm in a comment or 2. I appreciate comments on my images...even comments containing critiques. Am I so all fired different than anyone else around here?
Why does this kind of thing take place? Why can't we, as supposed adults, act like adults and monitor how something is said, even if we don't care for it? There's always something nice that can be said, even in a critique. -- JKK

| reply to Brainless I have only been around here for about a year, but I feel that with this being a public forum people should be able to take what other people say good or bad. No one makes anyone post in the gallery. If you dont want comments dont post, very simple. I have only been doing photography for a few short years and I have plenty to learn yet. I only shoot for a hobby. If someone likes something I did, it is kind of nice to know that maybe I am on the right track. If they flat out do not like it, I like to know that also, it makes me look at my image again, and maybe see things I had previously overlooked. So what if someone does not like a photo, it is not the end of the world. Can't a person make privite folders and share pictures with only those they want?
I disable all voting on all my photos, but I like comments. The voting means nothing to me.
I share my photos with friends and family who seem to enjoy them, but I am not going to learn anything from them, as they know even less than I do about photography. |

| reply to Brainless Can we get check boxes added in the upload interface that would: a) [] Voting Allowed b) [] Comments Allowed
And have both defaulted as CHECKED?
Its possible folks want one or the other, but not both. From a programming standpoint for the forum gods, I don't think adding the flag should be too difficult of an add on.
Also, adding a "hey mods" button would be good thing.
My own two cents...I post photos I would like to share. If someone doesn't like them, oh well. My self-esteem is hardly based on the opinions of those here at DSLR or the DI forums. I post photos I'm either proud of or find humorous. -- What do you want to do to the world, Ronald? Burn it all. See you next year, Ronald. |

| reply to Brainless Gizy, you are probably right. I think even some will ignore it, but I think most will take head. And I think it will solve most of the problem. But the sad part is, many of the self proclaimed experts, are just that. They hack away at others photos in order to make themselves look like experts. They let their light shine by snuffing out someone elses candle. And it is sad. Very sad.
Well, here is what the deal is with me. I have cleaned out my gallery yesterday. Then I posted one So-So photo just to keep my gallery open. I was out shooting this morning. It was a beautyful sunrise. I havent had a chance to process any of the shots yet, but I dso know onw thing. They wont be posted here. And here is why...
Mobility (or lack of) hase become a huge obstical in my life lately. Getting to the right place for a shot at the right time has become a challenge in itself. Then when I get home, I pour a lot of time and energy into processing each and every photo. I have spent my whole life as a commercial artist. I treat every photo as a creative piece of art. And as such, there is a part of me in every shot I post. I dont mind sharing it. In fact, I enjoy sharing it. It gives me great pleasure to share that part of me with others. But then one of the above mentioned people comes along. They see the photo, snatch it off the wall, throw it on the floor amd stomp on it. Then when you ask them why they did it, they say "Im a photographer. It was for your own good."
So, Im just not doing it anymore. At least not untill its fixed. |

| reply to Brainless There's one big thing so many people seem to miss about the Gallery. It's not just those that frequent the DI forums that upload to it. Just going through the first four pages there is a pretty good number of people I don't recognize. I'm willing to bet that a lot of them could care less about getting a critique, but don't realize that allowing comments means both good and bad. Maybe a little reminder that appears on the page after you click the "Upload your pic now" link would help. That should help with those that aren't regulars and only occasionally post to the Gallery. Now for us regulars that do want to allow comments, but don't aren't really looking for a critique, clearly state so in your description, and if your wishes aren't respected, let the mods take deal with it. I don't want to hear an nonsense about the mods having enought to do. If it's to the point that it's that much of a problem, then the offending parties really need to be dealt with in a much harsher, and possibly more permannet, manner. I honestly don't even know what, if anything the "Critique Invite" is supposed to do. I've never seen any indication of it actually working, but maybe it's just me. |
