Re: [VA] Intermittent internet problems - long post

I am in McLean, VA 22101. Cox is our internet provider. Same problem. Intermittent internet connection, until 6/9 when it was lost completely. We also use VOIP so we lost our phone too. I called tech support three times (with long wait each time) on 6/9 and I was told our problem started on 5/23. My cable modem lost signal dozens of times on 5/23 and it was getting worse as time went on. On 6/9 my modem lost signal thousands of times until it stopped for good. The earliest time I could get an appointment for a tech to come would be three days later, on 6/12. At the same time, my wife is looking for a job and it has been extremely frustrating when she was talking on the phone with a potential employer and the phone was dropped. We had been thinking it was the problem with the phone company (and working with them) but now we know it was the internet. She also can't use emails and respond job postings online. With all these, it will take them three days to come and check. It is soooo frustrating ....

ExSRUser,

In McLean as well, had another customer I support that had ongoing problems as well up to 6/3. They had a truck roll scheduled for 6/6, however, this was not necessary from my point of view, then we had the big storm with the 48 hour power outage so the truck never showed up.

I just checked and the problem has somewhat cleared itself up for this customer, however, in my opinion there is something up with the Cox return path in their network they are not fessing up to!

This customer has a FIOS install scheduled next week now!!

If I could get the modem MAC address I'll take a look. I never got a response for your issue we had been previously been discussing. Looking at your account again suggested you may still need a technician to come take a look.

I have had the 15/2 service for over 3 years... I am having the exact same problem. I am in Herndon VA. The Thursday after the storms, starting around 6pm, and it has been slower than dialup since. On occassion it will work for bursts of time but not long enough for any anything but email. Cable is working fine.

I also called tech service 3 times and they claimed everything is fine and I am imagining the slow speed. I even also connected it directly to my pc and still slow, swapped out a router, still slow...

So far the only saving factor is that I also have a Sprint 3G PC Card and can at least get one PC working.

It has now been 7 days, and if Cox does not think they have a problem, who knows what. All I know is that I am at wits end and starting to cost out FIOS.

I don't believe you are imagining the problem, it's just a matter of finding out where the problem lies. If you could PM me the MAC address of your cable modem I'll see if I can figure out what's going on.

Everything does seem fine from this end. The modem is registering online with no errors to speak of and what appears to be your router is connected.

When I got home last night there was a Cox tech at my neighbors house. Apparently everyone on my street was having this issue. After about an hour of troubleshooting and being on the phone, they found the issue. Apparently one of the 4 nodes coming into the neighborhood was out of service and for some reason all of our modems where still trying to connect to that node instead of rolling to an active node. (this is what the tech said the people on the phone told him, he did nothing at the site.) So they moved us to another node , we restarted the modems and everyone was up and it is still working 24 hours later.
