Is it just me or the past weeks on and off on and off again the Charlotte area has been either slow, laggy, not working at all, etc. Really this has become quite annoying. I check the log on the roadrunner help pages of network status and just about every day now has had issues in places. What's the deal? |

Are you by chance in that area of Charlotte? |

| reply to Char54442 Nope I'm actually in NE university city area, man sometimes this is as if i'm on dialup without the dialtone noise, resetting the modem and everything so often just to have a few moments of it being back faster. Time warner has really gotten lazy now, and like I mentioned, I have been seeing the website for network status and although they are barely ever clear as to what areas of charlotte are ever affected, almost every day seems to have a RED marker by it. |

| reply to Char54442 I checked my modem's 192 address log and this was the latest 3 things, only 1 of which actually had a date on it.

| reply to Char54442 Start calling them. It took me 9 months to get my problem fixed. I find calling the 943-beep number to be a lot better than the 377-9600 number. The 377 number can land you in national support and they're useless.
They are building a new hub in the university area. Should be online by the end of the year and that'll go a long way to fixing speed issues.
The hub for me comes online at the end of the month.
Specifically ask them to find your node and look at the bandwidth utilization. The one for my node was through the roof and no one ever bothered looking there. |
|
  Char54442
@rr.com | reply to Char54442 Ah, yeah, too bad there isn't a real public node map as alot of times when they list what's wrong on the network status page it just says node 285029856290860298whatever and not where it actually is located. Or is there? |

| reply to Char54442 It is absolutely not just you. I live off of Pence Rd in Charlotte and have been experiencing intermittent outages for a month now... sometimes out a few minutes, sometimes as much as twelve hours at a time. I experienced the same thing back in January. Roadrunner's answer is always to send a tech out; the tech comes out and everything happens to be working fine at that moment so he blames it on my router or finds & changes a cable inside that "may be bad". Of course, within a day of the tech leaving, my internet is out again and RR wants to send another tech out.... but of course they don't want to send someone when you're actually experiencing the issue... so I'm stuck on this endless loop of internet outages adding up to 10+ hours a day and extremely poor service. I pay more to Timewarner a month than I pay for electricity! Seriously considering giving up on RR and giving DSL, satellite, etc a shot. Grrr, at this point I'd be better off on dial-up -- it might be slow but at least I'd be able to access it as needed! |
|
  Char54442
@rr.com | reply to Char54442 Wow, I think the same thing happened in Jan for me too just about. Roadrunner and Cable TV is included in my rent price for where I live, so I'm kinda stuck even if I wanted to switch. |

You're most likely part of TWC's Charlotte Division since Union County is right beside Charlotte. You'll get whatever speeds the Charlotte Division gets. They do speed upgrades across an entire division, not to specific towns. Windstream isn't a big enough player in the game for TWC to be concerned with. When AT&T deploys their U-verse service (or some other serious competition comes along) is when you might see some kind of additional upgrades from TWC. |

| said by scots : They do speed upgrades across an entire division, not to specific towns. That's not always true. RoadRunner in Wilson, NC is 10/1 for standard and 15/2 for turbo since the city of Wilson has run fiber. And they were like that even before RR went from 5 to 7 just a few weeks ago. |

| reply to Char54442 Yeah they are all Time Warner's Charlotte metro division but it's possible when one city (ex: Charlotte) is having issues in places, another city (let's say, Gastonia), might still be running just fine, or vice versa.
Anyway, past few days it was better but then it's gotten bad again. |

Out of all the people covered by the problems in my area, I was the only one who took the time to call in and stay on top of the problem. I just called them again today because my speeds are back down in the gutter.
If you don't call, they don't know there is a problem. |

| reply to ke4pym Heh, I think when I got some time to waste on tech support for awhile, I think I will, funny thing is though is when you are about to, it suddenly comes back to normal. Makes ya wonder if psychicly the connection KNOWS when you are about to report against it, I did try the chatroom version but those guys seem stupid as they wont help me because I don't know the account information due to me having internet included in my rent so it's the landlord that's got the account.
Anyway might as well report the latest of what my modem's little page says as I don't think I have before, signals seem ok but these error msgs I have no idea what they mean:

| reply to Char54442 I live in north charlotte as well and my internet has been the same on and off. It went from being out for a few hours around midnight every night then got worse to all night every night and now it seems to be out 100% of the time =\
I can open a cmd prompt and tracert www.google.com and see that the connection is obviously working (though not very well..) but with terrible latency and often a "request timed out."
It's certainly irritating paying for a service that doesn't work. |

| reply to Char54442 I am in South Charlotte (Pineville) and have been experiencing slow downs in the evenings. I noticed it Thursday when a CNN.come News Video started stuttering. Tested and got a whopping 750 Kbps down. Called and got sent to Earthlink Support and asked immediately to be transferred to RR technical support for speed issues. Chalked it up as a maintenance thing and hung up after talking to a very nice guy in the Greensboro Call center. Friday was OK and Yesterday, I went down to 250 - 400 Kbps. Called and wasted almost 2 hours between three support guys and hold times. They are asking me to swap out the modem to see if that fixes it. The modem is fine at times and a dog at times. They even tried to blame it on my Router.
I am torn on whether to walk in and swap the modem or not. |

| reply to Char54442 I've also been having this dropout and degraded bandwidth problem for a few weeks now. In fact before I saw this I placed my 4th call to Time-Warner cable (Raleigh, NC) to schedule a line tech to come and check out the line.
I think it's been about 3 weeks or so, and maybe coincidentally that was about when TW Cable sent me a new cable modem that was supposed to enable me to get their free "enhanced speed" of about 7000 kbps.
When the RR line is ok I get just under 7000 kbps from either wireless or wired, and when bad, assuming I can reach their website my speed is under 60 kbps!! Other times it's out for up to 30 minutes or so.
I thought it was my new D-Link DIR-655 router that might be defective, plus I read just now that D-Link is more susceptible to line noise, etc. So I went back to my rock-solid Belkin Pre-N router and PC Card pair, and experience the same losses.
I'll post again at the end of Thursday after the RR tech leaves. But based on what I've read here am not optimistic. Anyone know of any class-action lawsuits that are open against RoadRunner? Maybe that's the only way to get their attention.
Regards, pizzaiolo
Raleigh, NC
PS-just as I was posting this it reset again and was gone for about two minutes. I just did a speedtest and got a whopping 101 kbps download and 125 upload. |

Make sure they test the line for signal quality and packet loss. You could also ask them to get in touch with a maintenance tech and ask them to check the utilization of your hub's connection. |
