 how to t-shoot

we had heavy storms all day yesterday and last night, with several inches of rain. internet was still ok when i went to bed around 3 am. when i got up at noon, wife told me it was down.
i have the centurytel 1.5 Pure package with no phone service. my wife knew enough to reboot the modem and router, which didn't help. i looked at the modem, and the lights looked normal (the link light was on solid green). i tried rebooting modem (Westell model C90 36R516) again when i got up.
i plugged in a phone on an inside jack, and although scratchy sounding, i did get a dialtone. i took the phone outside to my ctel network box and plugged it in. dialtone, but didn't seem scratchy. i brought the phone back in and plugged in using a dsl filter this time. didn't sound scratchy anymore, but still no net.
i got out my laptop and connected to an unsecure wireless signal to have a look at the ctel site.
walked back to my desktop, and my connection was fine again. not sure what fixed it.

did any other ctel customers have an outage this morning?
what else can i do to troubleshoot this problem next time it happens? i thought a green link light meant all is well.
does my ancient modem have an ip address i could use to poke around in, like my cable modem did before i switched?

Not quite sure what happened but it could have been water got into a line somewhere along your loop to the CO/RT. You did pretty much everything correctly with troubleshooting and as far as checking the modem stats you can disconnect your router and connect the ethernet cable directly to your computer and go to 192.168.1.1 for the stats.

ok your modem does not have an ip address to go to. thoes
old westell modems were not intelligent enough.

I would suggest looking around and trying to pick up a
newer dsl modem / router to use. I am using a 2wire
home 2701 home gateway and have also used a 1800 home
gateway. I have also used some of the newer westell
units.

Check around at pawn shops, good will store, flea markets.
etc..

with a newer unit you should be able to get some line info
that could help tracking down the problem

yeah that is just not true I have a Westell C90 sitting beside of me I used for 4 years before getting a newer westell for the 10 MB package and you have certainly get to the modem stats with that modem and even ones way before that. He/she doesn't need a new modem to get to the stats

there are several models that have a C90 designation, he happens to have one of the older models out there in the westell 516. This modem doesn't have any interface to access if I remember correctly. It has been awhile since I have taken a call from someone with that modem.
