[Troubleshooting] What do I need to do to get EVDO signal?

Hi. I recently signed up for a a wireless internet plan from Alltel. I've got the Huawei EC228 modem. Upon arriving home, I was able to get connected via windows and eventually Linux.

My connection was, unfortunately, to the slower speed 1xRTT signal. Looking at the signal stats in the house, the RSSI hovered around -90dbm to even -100 dbm. The modem tried to catch the EVDO signal, but the RSSI there was even worse, -110dbm.

I went outside and the EVDO and CDMA signal did improve, but not enough to connect at EVDO speeds.

I took the laptop/modem in my truck and found that I could connect at EVDO speeds only about a half mile away (I got 1.1Mbps download!!!). I believe the tower is about 9 miles away, but of course, no one at the alltel store knows anything about where there antennas are located.

The difference between my house and the place where I could get EVDO speeds is a wall of trees and probably a ~30' elevation increase.

Given that the EVDO signal can make it to my area, will I be able to get an external antenna (and possibly even an amp?) and get the higher speeds at my house? I'd of course like to avoid having to put up a 50' tower to get above the trees.

Is this a try an antenna and/or amp and see if it works situation? Does anyone have any experience/advice from a similar situation? Or am I hopelessly stuck with the slower 1xRTT speeds (which is an improvement over my current dialup connection, if not a bit pricey...)

thanks for any help!
mike

Alltel sells a Cyfre Amplifier/Antenna kit to their customers for $199.00 . That should help you greatly

Mr. Kobler,

What did you end up doing with your situation, and how did it work?? I'm south of Rochester with a similar problem! Let me know!
