| Westell 610014 as bridge => router
I'm in the process of re-configuring my home network after the husband's computer got a nasty trojan/rootkit/etc. infestation and would like to set up the modem to act as a bridge so that I can put Draytek router back in to do the work that a router does better.
I followed directions from the Westell forum here: »members.verizon.net/~res08lyg/6100.htm AFAIK, that works except that when everything boots up again I have no Internet connection. All modem lights were lit except the Internet light.
I did not clone the modem's MAC address to the router so if Ctel is filtering by MAC addresses then that could be a source of the problem. Other than that, I'd guess I have the router configured wrong.
I followed the directions on the attached page from the user manual but a) don't have a clue what the "scheduling" is or whether I need to put something in there and b) down on page 5 when I enable "broadband access" there it disables the PPOE configuration (on page 2).
Right now I have things set up as a double NAT with the modem supplying an IP address to the router and the router handling the LAN (which works) but I'd really prefer the modem to act as a bridge.
Anybody else done this who is willing to provide some direction? |

| The way I set mine up (and the westells were a bit tricky) is I had to reset the modem first to set it up as a bridge then I hooked everything up through my router and set the IP range on my router as 192.168.2.1 so I could hit the westell of 192.168.1.1 and from there I went in the westell to let it handle the PPPoE logon. -- 10,000/768 CenturyTel PPPoE DSL line (really 5,000/768 ) |

| reply to seagreen CTL doesn't need cloned MAC's (the servers don't care what your MAC address is). It sounds like you're syncing up (the DSL light is lit solid) but not taking the second step. The router needs to create a PPPoE connection.
You don't need to enter anything under scheduling, and I don't think Broadband access needs to be enabled.
You should just set up the PPPoE page (for dynamic address) and be done.
For what it's worth, the internet light on the DSL modem will NOT be lit in bridge mode. That light only comes on if you use the built-in PPPoE client. -- The goal of the broadcast engineer is to get all the meters on the transmitter to go as far to the right as possible!! |

| said by fuffer :the internet light on the DSL modem will NOT be lit in bridge mode. That light only comes on if you use the built-in PPPoE client. Well, that's a good tidbit to know, thanks! OK, I'll try again tomorrow when I feel more like beating my head against a brick wall (again). I did try to access the Internet and got exactly nowhere so, so, in addition to the Internet light not being lit, I also had no connection.
If that fails, I'll move on to the advice above yours.
chd176,
I have a question about your instructions. You say you reset the modem - does that mean you used the factory reset button because that won't put it into a bridge mode. I've reset mine a couple of times today to get it back to where I could access it again, so it goes to a default setup minus the PPPOE credentials.
If you the same modem can you tell me precisely what you changed to put it into bridge mode? Thanks! |

| reply to seagreen oh I had the older 6100 B90 and whenever I reset it using the reset button to restore factory settings it went into bridge mode. I haven't tried that with my new 6100 E90 so it may be different sorry about that. -- 10,000/768 CenturyTel PPPoE DSL line (really 5,000/768 ) |

| reply to seagreen The newer 6100's are in a router/bridge mode by default, so if you don't put in any user/password, you can let your router handle the PPPoE session.
Or you can go into the Westell, turn the DHCP serer off (or leave it on), and change the VC to "bridge" instead of PPPoE, and save. If you leave the DHCP server enabled, you will still be able to access the westell's stats page to monitor your connection if necessary. If you disable the DHCP, then you won't be able to access it, and will have to hit the reset button if you want to get back into it. |

| OK - I have it working in bridge mode (thanks to the advice in this thread) but it's not entirely satisfactory as I have no access to the modem stats.
I (currently) have the router addressing in this range: 192.168.1.xxx with the modem set back to being a LAN DHCP server. The modem is presumably still at 192.168.1.1 (as is the router? not sure how that works!) When I type in hxxp://192.168.1.1 I get the router's configuration screens, not the modem's.
My exact Westell modem model is E90-610014-06 Rev C and it was in PPPoE mode following a reset to factory defaults.
I also tried the router addressing at 192.168.2.xxx which also did not give me access to the modem's screens.
So, perhaps I misunderstood - I thought it might be possible in some way to directly access the modem screens through the router. I know I can do it by swapping cables out as long as the modem is still set up as a DHCP server or if I manually configure an appropriate IP address for my network adaptor. So.... is that the only way to do it? |

| reply to seagreen I did a little bit of experimenting and the only way I was able to get to the router and westell screens simultaneously was to have my router set to DHCP and have my westell setup on the private lan setting with the westell handling the PPPoE connection. When I tried to let the router handle the PPPoE connection I was no longer able to get to the westell screen -- 10,000/768 CenturyTel PPPoE DSL line (really 5,000/768 ) |

| OK - thanks for that info.
I've tried various addressing schemes and nothing works the way I hoped. I even tried the router at 192.168.1.2 and THAT didn't work either so I can just swap cables if I think the modem is acting up and want to look at it. It just means nobody else on the LAN can look at the modem and give it a swift kick if it needs it.
I still think I don't want the modem and the router on the same IP address so I'll go back in and switch the modem back to 192.168.0.1. |
