[Vista] Help on picking Vista Home Premium Version

Hello, I am considering buying Vista Home Premium, but I am wondering which 'version', if you will, I should buy.

On Newegg there is an OEM system builder disc, which is the cheapest. A full package, which is the most expensive, and an upgrade (I have XP Pro) which is in between in price.

My main question is whether or not the OEM version can be reinstalled after, say, the hard drive has been reformatted. For example, say I do a reformat on XP and install the OEM Vista. Then 3 months later I reformat again and install the OE M Vista again. Is this possible? If it is the same computer, or if it is not being used, can the OEM key be used again?

And finally, if I get the upgrade DVD, does it enable me to do a full clean install? Or does it have to be installed over top of XP?

Thanks a lot, this will clear up the confusion.

I'm not sure if MS has changed any of their OEM policies, but I personally have preferred paying a little more and doing without the OEM hassle.
I believe that after you install and activate an OEM edition on one PC, you are not allowed to transfer the license to another PC.
Microsoft does not provide phone support for OEM editions since they are intended for system builders who would provide the support.

The upgrade DVD can be used for a clean install. What you have to do is install it without typing in the key. Then after the installation, you do the upgrade, and enter the correct key. Just make sure you choose the same version of Vista that you paid for when doing the full and upgrade installs.

Alright that makes sense.

My friend though had to insert the key when he installed the upgrade over XP.

And what do you mean by 'after the installation, you do the upgrade'?

with the OEM version, it is "locked" to the PC it is installed.. however you can change memory, hard drive(s), CPU, video card, ethernet card, and so on.. however if you replace the motherboard, then you need a new license.. unless the motherboard is the same or a replacement for the original motherboard.

upgrade cleanly
