[IL] Appt connection drop help (assuming bad cable modem)

a review of the connection status to the 1st hop, after 100 pings
Click for full size
My problem I think is with my cable modem, but I'm still at a loss as of what I need to do: I use this network at the appt for work, with the connection very often being slow, unresponsive or just won't connect. My connection to the wireless router in the appt is solid (using landline), but it's the hop beyond it that's been giving me issues since I've moved here last august. I originally thought it was just people on the network using up too much bandwith just making my life hell, but I figured that couldn't be right... after investigating further, I found that the router will lose connection to the DHCP, and to solve this problem for a short amount of time, I have to restart the router to regain a connection. I don't think the problem is with the router, but rather with the cable modem that's inside the appt. this piece of hardware on the event log shows A LOT of errors. Connection to this piece of hardware just to view it settings is also not always available (will give Page can't be displayed error??)

2. Give a description of any home networking setup you may have. (i.e. router make/ model, hubs, adapters, etc.)
I live in an appt here in downtown, shared with all other tenants in the building.
Router is a Wzr2-G3000z router. This router was installed in September to replace an older linksys router in the appt. Running firmware V. 1.00_1.26

3. Modem make, model and firmware version.
Ambit 60678 EU cable modem
Hardware Version: 1.12
Software Version: 2.57.2033

4. Signal levels found at »192.168.100.1 if applicable.
Downstream Receive Power Level: -3.3 dBmV
Downstream SNR: 29.3 dB
Upstream Transmit Power Level: 43.0 dBmV

My question is: is this problem from that cable modem, and do I contact my landlord about this issue and have them handle it, or go straight to mediacom for tech support? I just want to make sure that when I do need to contact tech support, I am doing everything possible to troubleshoot from my end, to not waste anyone's time. My PC I take to work with me, and the connection there is stable and normal.

Doubt its the cable modem. Your downstream SNR sucks. Should be at least 30 with 32 and up preferred. I am betting you have noise on the line. Get a tech out.

Downstream SNR right now is sitting right at 30. you sure it's not that cable modem? it's 4 years old, and shows 1 problem occuring on the line for over +100,000 times?

Or, maybe I'm just not that Cable adapt, I guess

Not totally ruling out the cable modem, but in my experience 95% of the time its noise and 5% the modem. So it could be the modem, stop by an office and swap it out or get a tech to do it, that will tell you right away.

If this cable modem is leased to the Apartment Building, the landlord/building manager will need to contact business support or local office.

Also, your average ping time to hop #2 should be under 25-30 ms. Your average is 152ms, with a high of 394, which are way to high.

yes: the 1st hop is to the Appt's Wireless router in the appt. complex, the 2nd is to the cable modem for the complex.

The second hop is not the cable modem. Cable modems do not appear in the traceroutes. The device is the line card in the CMTS.

The Ambit modem you have needs to be replaced. The smaller version works great but for some odd reason the bigger version started having problems. I have so far replaced over a dozen of them.

The same thing every time, reported down SNR is around 28-29 even though with a new modem it's just fine.

Also I would try without the router when troubleshooting.

I second removing the Ambit modem... I hate ambit modems...

What kind of product does a company make if they dont even put their own name on it?

Update:

Had a tech come to the Appt complex..fooled around with the router only and then said the connection is "fine". Got in touch with landlord again to see if he can get another FST to visit the complex and look at the cable modem only and look at signal noise. As before, packet loss at the 2nd hop and not connecting beyond it remains the issue.

I've also noticed that now the Upstream power level will hit 61.1 dBmV and take down the connection as well...

If the FST still deems that there is no problems on the line, what are my options..I'm just tired of reading emails for 10-20 min then loosing connection for 20..then back again for 5..on / off /on / off and it's making me lose my sanity.

Typical of an Ambit after around 6 months of use.

Alrighty: after 2 months of me complaing to both Mediacom and to my landlord to the techs are looking at the right piece of hardware (of which they haven't) and talking: the Tech's still belive "nothing is wrong". I'm calling on monday to basicly beg my landlord to let me buy a brand-new cable modem for the complex. Question for you all: any recommendations as to what brand to shoot for?

Go with the RCA DCM 425. It seems to be really tolerant of any signal level. And it runs a lot cooler then my old Mot. modem.

Why buy a cable modem, when Mediacom will provide one for no charge. You are still going to have to deal with mediacom, since your pings to the 10.20.65.1 hop are WAY to high. The average time should be under 35ms, which shows mediacom has a problem somewhere on your node. Are the ping times still high at 9pm? What are they like at 7am? As for the upstream power level getting up to 60, that's another problem, to many splitters, poor cable (including the drop from the pole or pedestal)
ADDED: If it's mediacoms modem, have them swap it out, no sense buying one.
