Westell modem and line stats for centuryTel Question

I live in Columbia, Missouri and have the 1.5 DSL. Every time it rains or gets cloudy, I lose connection. CenturyTel has been out several times over the past three months but it is still not fixed. The people that they send out say the lines are old and need to be replaced but have to get approval to do so.

They do respond to my calls and send out a repairman that says they tighten a bolt, put a terminal in, reset at office blab, blab, heard it all again and again. The next time it rains or even lightning in the distance...boom..... its out again.

Here are the stats. Thanks for any help.

Transceiver Revision: 5.2.2.0
Vendor ID Code: 4
Line Mode: G.DMT Mode
Data Path: Fast
Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 1536 256
Margin (dB) 4.5 16.0
Line Attenuation (dB) 54.0 31.0
Transmit Power (dBm) 13.7 0.4

Also I have a old NID filter (probably five or more years old) and was wondering if a new one would help my problem. Also I am 19,400 ft out. Thanks again.

You've definitely got something wrong with a downstream margin of 4.5. That low of a number won't keep solid sync with your modem. You can see if it's something inside by running a phone cord directly from the customer side of the line module in your NID, and bypassing all your inside wiring. Then check your line stats again, and see if that number improves.

Thank you very much for that info. I will do that and let you know the stats. Again very much appreciated.

Yes it is. Right now it is thundering and raining and no dsl....just on and off constantly.

I called them again and now they are saying they want to come inside the house and see if everything is setup properly. Been there, done that, I told them, but they want inside the house again anyway.

If I ask them to replace the old NID filter, will that help or maybe replacing my Westell modem which is the very small one as compared to the large one I had for a few years prior.

I am just getting the run around again and again.

Thanks for all your help.

I purchased an all in one modem, router, wireless access point . It is a Dlink DSL-2640B. Since installing it my lightning disconnects have gone away. You may want to try a different modem...

Is this Dlink easy to setup with CenturyTel? It does sound great?

Thank you.

It has an automatic setup, but I already had knowledge of what settings were needed, so I didn't try the auto setup. I didn't shop around, I just ordered from Newegg and they shipped from Memphis, so it only took a day for it to arrive.

If you do get one, we can help you with the setup if needed.

Can you check your stats again at the NID when your DSL is out? This would prove if it's an inside or outside issue, if you can test it while the problem is going on.

Yes I can do that but usually I am not off long enough at a time to check it. It takes time to go outside and get it plugged in at the right moment. When it rains or thunders, its on and then its off, on....off....on....off. Now maybe I could open a window upstairs and yell back and forth with my hubby, outside in a downpour, ready to plug the phone cord in the NID when my DSL goes out.

Heck, it would be worth it if I could get this nightmare solved.

I sure appreciate all your help. I am definitely getting more answers/info from this forum than I did from CenturyTel's three months of report tickets. I am on their escalated tiers however. I do think they are trying to get it solved but wouldn't you think after three months......

I have this same problem but MOST of the time it's with the lightning that knocks out my DSL. Also it's just a brief loss of sync. I'm sure it's something to do with the westell modems but with your downstream margin it can cause problems as well.

Just an update....Century Tel came out yesterday and I asked him about the NID being old and so he replaced it with a newer one. He then said "lets see if this helps and if not", then??

At least now we are getting somewhere hopefully.

Keep us updated. The newer NID's we use are much more broadband friendly than the older ones.

I got another call from Century Tel today and they are going to do some more testing on the lines......in other words....need more time to hunt the problem down. It sounded like they have an idea as to what is happening but don't know exactly where the problem is.
